Production process of tungsten carbide burrs and its applications: Production process of tungsten carbide burrs and its applications Tungsten carbide is well known for its tough applications and strength features as a metal compound. Tungsten carbide is also called cemented carbide. Tungsten along with most metals arranges themselves in a frame like a chain link fence. During immense heat and pressure, carbon atoms are packed inside the tungsten atoms instead of being joined side by side as with other ordinary compounds. The production process of tungsten carbide in any format such as tungsten carbide burrs is difficult requiring a delicate process of production with precision.   The production process of tungsten carbide burrs involves materials such as tungsten carbide balls that are amalgamated with grains for some time to get proportionate dispersal of the grains and the cobalt powder. This powder is dried and wax added as a binder. This wax holds the powder together and makes it somewhat slippery so that it presses into different shapes of tungsten carbide burrs. The shapes are pre sintered in a furnace with atmospheric control under temperatures ranging from 1,000 to 1,500F. The wax disappears by leaving the pieces with a formation like of a soft chalk. The chalk pieces that are derived can be machined easily and can break off or are chipped if handled improperly. The final sintering process usually takes place in a special atmosphere, a vacuum or both. The temperature maintained in this process is around 2,500 – 2,700 F. PowerPoint Presentation: During the final sintering process, the parts can shrink up to 15% in any dimension and up to 35% in volume. Usually 15 to 30 tons of pressure is used to form tungsten carbide into a tool shape such as tungsten carbide blanks . In the formation of tungsten carbide shapes, usually four methods are used and these are Molding, Green State Machining, Grinding and Brazing carbide to carbide. Tungsten carbide burrs comes in various shapes and sizes such as Cylindrical Shape (type SA), Spherical Shape (type SD), Oval (Egg) shape, Tree Shape radius (type SF), Tree Shape – Pointed, Flame Shape (type SH), 60 Degree Cone Shape (type SJ). The selection of burr shape depends upon the manufacturing process for which it has to be used.   Having more of the cutting edge engaged in material will improve the part finish. There is also flute cut style shape that is dependent on the type of material being machined, the amount of stock removal and the finishing required. It is advisable that the harder the material being machined, the finer the cut or shape should be.
