HOPE worldwide’s programs have been awarded many times as the winners of the “best social program” during charitable competitions run by the Moscow City Government. This has meant that thousands and thousands of people have received real and significant help, experienced the feeling of being taken care of, and have learned to stand firm on their own two feet physically and morally. Charitable activity in our capital is becoming widespread, highly valued, and is now considered a noble task. This is largely due to the work of your Fund and volunteers. I’m convinced that together our citizens will always have enough kindness in their hearts and motivation in their souls to continue to provide help and aid to those who need it the most. I wish you continued success in your noble activity, good health and happiness! Yury M. Orphans – “We are one family-Russia”:  Orphans – “We are one family-Russia” Attendance: 8000 children from 90 orphanages, 2000 volunteers Partnership: Russian Federation Government Moscow Government Federal Government of the Russian Federation State Parlament Committee of Culture and Sport I would like to express my deepest admiration to all those involved in HOPE Worldwide for their active participation in preparing and conducting the charitable concert in the framework of the all-Russia charity program: “We are all one family - Russia”, on February 13th, 2001 in the “Olympiyskiy” Sports Complex. Because of the personal contribution of each participant, this event became a great celebration for over 8,000 orphans from orphanages and schools all over Moscow and the Moscow Region. I hope that this event will be an example for future efforts uniting all those concerned with the social problems of our future generations. Chairman of the Committee N. N. Gubenko Russian orphans - the facts:  Russian orphans - the facts The importance of the work performed for orphans is illustrated by the fact that there are a great number of socially unstable families in Russia, which creates the problem of socially unprotected children. Among these are children who have been left by their parents, children of parents who have lost their parental rights, and children from poor or broken households. In Russia there are currently over 750,000 children living and studying in special institutions. According to statistics: - 40% of orphanage graduates become homeless, criminals or prostitutes - 40 % become alcoholics and drug abusers - 10% commit suicide All this testifies to the fact that these children face many difficult circumstances in life which limit and often prevent their development. They lack healthy communication outside the orphanage walls and they do not receive the necessary life-skills training in order to face life in the outside world as adults. Leaving the orphanage, graduates face many added difficulties, including financial problems, everyday responsibilities (rent for an apartment, taking care of a household), social struggles (inability to communicate with people around them), and professional issues (difficulties finding a job). Due to insufficient professional training inside the government run institutes, orphans have a very difficult time finding good jobs with good pay. Orphanage graduates receive special apartments from the government, but this creates a new problem: they have neither the financial nor physical ability to take care of them. Often such apartments become dens for criminal activity, and it is common for an inexperienced orphan to get cheated when trying to rent their apartment, which often results in the loss of their property. As a result many graduated orphans become homeless and begin abusing drugs and alcohol. Girls frequently face unintended pregnancies and many leave their children to the government to take care of them (in special houses for babies) because they are neither willing nor able to raise their children. Thus their children become socially neglected in the same way they once were and the destructive pattern repeats itself. Orphans – Day of Hope:  Orphans – Day of Hope A monthly program for children living in orphanages. Impact Monthly 6,500 orphans in 7 cities 3,000 volunteers During their stay at the orphanage: Personal attention from HOPE worldwide staff and volunteers Ability to receive additional education to acquire new organizational and life-management skills Gifts received on birthdays and Christmas Participation in large social and athletic activities outside the orphanage After Graduating From the Orphanage: Help for children in choosing a profession and preparing for higher education Psychological assistance for dealing with difficult life-situations common among orphans Job placement assistance Help for orphans living on their own for the first time, (ie. obtaining necessary furniture and home appliances) and help acquiring skills necessary for taking care of an apartment. Andrianov Moscow, Russia Education - Labyrinth of life:  Education - Labyrinth of life To provide education about AIDS for the orphans and children from poor and needy families. This program popularizes healthy life-style choices and warns children about the dangers of drugs, alcoholism, and explicit sex among teens. The Labyrinth is a system of 12 interrelated rooms (room size: 1.5m, 1.5m and 2.2m high). The walls of the rooms are decorated with graffiti-style murals, which provide information about health hazards, and the dangers of drugs, alcohol, and sex. In each room, the teen answers questions on the walls regarding his life, chooses the direction of his further movement inside the labyrinth, and sees the consequences of his decisions. Attendance: 1000 Children per year Seniors - Old Friends’ Home:  Seniors - Old Friends’ Home Goals: To provide a meal to those who can not afford to eat. Health – Sport Festival:  Health – Sport Festival The festival is most popular children’s sports festival in Moscow and the largest annual gathering of orphans and volunteers in all of Russia. For the thousands of children in attendance, the annual sports festival gives them a fantastic opportunity to make new friends and build long lasting relationships with other orphans, and offers many brothers and sisters who have been separated and placed in different orphanages their only chance throughout the entire year to spend time together. Attendance: 6,800 children from 150 orphanages in 4 cities Results: City Government and City Department of Education declared the Sport Festival day as a “Day of Health” for all institutions in Moscow.
