14I found myself craving more comfortable and colorful clothing, so I thought to myself, if no oneelse is making it, then why don’t I? In addition to that, I felt there was a real lack of relativelyeco-friendly clothing where the price reflected the value of the product, so with all of these ideasin mind I decided to fill the void in the market and create Pitusa.Can you tell us a little more about the products?Our products draw on all sorts of different inspiration but the consistent themes are comfort,color and a global appeal. We are constantly reworking the clothes to make them more excitingthan the average brand. I submerged myself into the styles and colors of other cultures that I canuse as influence on the Pitusa line, and what really sets us apart is the color.Who are the masterminds behind Pitusa?I [Clara Lago] am the founder of Pitusa and Kevin Ross, a close friend that I met at university, ismy business partner.What is the company ethos, and what do you promise in terms of environmental or socialgood?The eco-friendly and socially aware aspect of the company is very important to us. Weconsistently promise fair trade, a socially conscious brand, fair wages in our production, and acontinuous support of development in global businesses.

15Are your competition equally eco / socially aware?I don’t think so for these two reasons:1) Most brands, especially those bringing the customer decent prices, are producing with little tono regard toward how their clothing is being produced. We at Pitusa make a concerted effort tomake sure the production of our clothing is in compliance with international health and safetystandards in the work place.2) Those brands that are eco friendly and socially aware use it as a marketing tool to define thebrand. The fact that we are eco and socially friendly is not something we use to market ourproduct but rather something we feel strongly about.Why is this startup important for the world?Many startups succeed and many fail but it is the trial and error, the daring risk, and thedetermination to fulfill a vision that makes the business world an exciting and interesting arena.Without startups we would not have any of the many innovative things we have today, and wehope we can contribute!Are you looking for investment?Of course! We are always looking to grow and see what opportunities come our way.

16What does the future hold for Pitusa?Where do you see the company being in 2, 5, 10 years time? The sky’s the limit as far as we’reconcerned. We’re looking to become bigger, better and more global. We are so new on thefashion scene (only 7 months) so we are just beyond thrilled to see where we can take this.The eco-fashion movement is in full effect – written by Charlie Hilton and SavWhether you are watching “some country’s next top model”, an episode of Sex and the City, orThe Devil Wears Prada, you associate fashion with luxury, spending, and lavish behaviour. So inthe era of increasing environmental sensitivity, is there a place for sustainable brands? Long hasthe fashion industry taken the rap from environmentalists, ranging from their supply-chains tothe fair treatment of animals. However, there is a new dawn: the new wave of eco-fashionentrepreneurs are having an easy ride.For good reason too, with responsible and ecologically-sensitive fabric sourcing, green fashionhouses can uplift local industries, benefiting communities and serving as a platform for localeconomic growth and social prosperity. Welcome to the eco-fashion era as eco-friendly showsand designers are springing up like knock-off hand bags in any urban center.

17The bootstrapped nature that most startups are faced with lends well to the eco-fashion market,where cost-effective and novel materials can be used. Take Pitusa’s tracksuit pants, for example,using 100% recycled plastic bottle fabric – a conscious solution, which is more cost effectivethan non-recycled materials. This is one of the many reasons that people believe sustainablefashion is much more than just a passing trend or fad; from the people behind the clothing tothose who buy it, it is very much a philosophy that will only grow stronger.As we take a closer look at Pitusa, we see that they describe themselves as “boho-chic“. What isthat exactly? Apparently, if you have to ask, you don’t get “it”. Looks like this eco-fashion labelis an snooty as the traditionalists. Au contraire mon in-vogue frere: Pitusa’s attitude is down-to-earth. They make clothes based on different sets of inspiration while maintaining the consistentthemes of comfort, color and a global appeal. As mentioned in the interview: “we are constantlyreworking the clothes to make them more exciting than the average brand. I submerged myselfinto the styles and colors of other cultures that I can use as influence on the Pitusa line, and whatreally sets us apart is the color.”As a start-up, is Pitusa afraid of failing? Not at all. This is exactly where success and innovationare raised: through experimentation and taking risks – both great ingredients for any good start-up. Having this enthusiasm is normal for such a young company. Eventually, investment fromtrue believers in the eco-fashion movement will be needed. One thing remains true, no matterwhat business: it takes money to make money.One unavoidable road block will be the competitive landscape of fashion itself. Brands competeon high-end image on the marketing side and low-end operations on the production side.Therefore, Pitusa’s commitment to their values (like promising fair trade, a socially consciousbrand, and paying decent wages) basically goes against clothing industry 101 textbooks.However, Pitusa might have an advantage in the form of their beliefs: being sustainable anddoing the right thing is part of their ethos – not just a fad.Nevertheless, the real challenge will be changing the perception of the fashion world and thebuyers. Since the hippie days of the 1960′s, “environmental” meant going from riches to rags –not what designers want to sell. So what will it take for eco to become chic? ClaraLago, the founder, was sporting one of their Inca Abaya’s when we talked. Clara felt like therewas a lack of color in the market, which is the reason why neon pinks, greens and yellow’s areblatant in every piece. The material used is only the best quality and eco-friendly fabrics sourcedfrom Peru, Pima Cotton. Pima Cotton is the world’s finest cotton and Pitusa also works with aunique fabric that blends Alpaca (15%) and Pima Cotton (85%). Pitusa is about making productsthat are sustainable, eco-friendly and respect fair trade. Pitusa likes to keep synthetic materials toa bare minimum. One of their pieces, the track pants, are literally made from 20 recycled plasticbottles. They revolve around being green and natural, which goes along with the “peace” aurafound throughout the collection.I feel like a tall person like me would have a hard time wearing their Abaya, and look much moreattractive on a person like Clara who sported it perfectly. It feels comfortable beyondcomparison, and I would wear it around the house like I wear a lot of my favorite dresses. But itbelongs on the petite, tiny body type that I very much do not have. Maybe I’ll get myself one ofthe Alpaca hats

It’s truly amazing.Last week he came home with what can only be described as the world’s mostAMAZING kaftan (or Moo-Moo, as my American friend Matt calls it). It’s neon coralpink (my fave colour), it’s cotton jersey (soooo soft!) and it has an awesome neon yellowbraided strip down the front (so, like, ethnic).It has filled a gap in my wardrobe that I didn’t know existed – I can’t take it offand I really don’t want to. My friend Amanda actually has the same one and we lovethem so much we both wore them to the same party last week (See? Obsessed).Obviously a kaftan like this needs a bag to match and whilst I was blithelyshowering at Tropicana Beach at the weekend, James was up to his old tricks… Ireturned to see a wonderful paper bag of goodies nestled on my lounger – andinside? This absolute shazz-o-rama of a beach bag. It’s a basket, yes; with leatherhandles, yes; but it’s absolutely COVERED in the teensiest tiniest multi-colouredsequins – it’s ridiculous! And his reason for buying it? A smattering of the sequins arethe same neon coral pink as my kaftan. Now that is faultless accessorising..

30The adorable little Indian leather flats are a seasonal fave – George Scarbroughand I buy them religiously each summer from Ganesha in the port and wear them untilthe soles wear through… Oddly enough, the only reason I ever happened upon these inthe first place was that, when I used to work for Erick Morillo, I once had to puttogether a costume for him for a fancy dress party to which he was going as anIndian. In hindsight, it should have been obvious that he meant a Red Indian. 33Just another steaming hot night in Miami… deciding what to wear. Back in December there was aHerve Leger dress I died over that was gradient shades of gray with neon yellow… that dress wasthe inspiration for this look. From breezy rooftops to strolling along the bay, this outfit was not onlycomfortable but it kept me cool in what was probably a 99% humidity level. These wedges areprobably the most comfortable heels I own. Five inch heel aside, they make me feel like I’m walkingon air.

With pieces made inPeru from the softest eco-friendly jersey and alpaca in mouth watering neoncolours, the clothes provide a message of piece in the Middle East. Thedesigner Clara Lago, grew up in London went to University in Miami and spenttime in Peru and it is clear to see the influence of all these places in herclothing line; Pitusa, which prides itself on being colourful andcomfortable.

Iguess Ive always been drawn to the uniqueness of anything that is handmade and knowing that nobody elsewould have something like it when I got back to "the states." Thats why when I received this Inca mini skirtfrom Pitusa, I immediately feel in love with the fabric and story behind it. Theyre handmade from Peruvian"mantillas" which are used by Peruvian women to carry their babies in the mountains of Peru. The fabric is alsoeco-friendly and made from recycled bottles. Pretty cool huh?
