Research by networking • Even technology-savvy companies like Nokia do not know everything, nor have the time and resources to do everything • Much of the best technology is created by networking • Nokia creating lablets with universities: • NRC lablet created at Lausanne (EPFL) during Spring 2008 • Others include U. of Cambridge, MIT, TKK • EU framework programmes bring together industry with research institutes and universities • Nokia seeks cooperation with best research facilities, be they in universities, research institutes or companies 3 MINATEC Crossroads 2008 – MINAmI & U-Metag – Iiro Jantunen

Brought together by EU FP 6 • 6th FP MIMOSA brought together CEA-LETI with Nokia to create a 2.4 GHz RFID radio for mobile phones • In MINAmI the cooperation is about creating a mass memory RFID tag • Promising opportunity created • Joint U-METAG project created to further develop UWBLEE technology together 4 MINATEC Crossroads 2008 – MINAmI & U-Metag – Iiro Jantunen

Bringing together digital and paper media 1st generation: Web links written on paper + Cheap to print + No extra technology needed - Threshold to write the link address manually on a computer web browser 2nd generation: Web link readable for mobile phone • NFC tag • Optical tag 3rd generation: Digital content implanted on paper (U-Metag) 5 MINATEC Crossroads 2008 – MINAmI & U-Metag – Iiro Jantunen + Optical tag is cheap to print + NFC becoming available on mobile phones - Price of data connection - Time needed for slow download - Energy use + Low threshold to use once technology adopted + No price of download + Fast download + Little energy used - Future technology, not yet there

User interface requirements • The 0,1 – 1 – 10 second rule of user experience • 0,1 s: haptic response or display change • 1 s: something really happening (download bar) • 10 s: download/upload done • The first two rules are just about user interface programming efficiency • The third rule is about operational speed • Example download speed of 10 Mbit/s → ~10 MB can be downloaded without hurting user experience • NFC radio interface speed 424 kbit/s → ~ 400 kB in 10 seconds 6 MINATEC Crossroads 2008 – MINAmI & U-Metag – Iiro Jantunen
