Understanding Child Labour Broadly, Child Labour is defined as paid or unpaid working children below the age of 14yrs Under Juvenile Justice (care and protection of children) Amended Act 2006- working child falls in the category “child in need of care and protection”. According to International Labour Organization (ILO)- All work or services extracted from any person under the menace of penalty & for which the said person has not offered himself/herself voluntarily is Forced Labour

Key Statistics According to ILO, around 250 million working Children around the world between the age group of 5-14, of which majority number are in India ILO Report 2005: 12.3 million people are forced labour worldwide,2.5 million of them are victims of human trafficking, 120 million employed in hazardous and exploitive work. 8.4 million children trapped in slavery, trafficking, debt bondages, prostitution, pornography and other illicit activities. 22,000 children die every year in work related accidents The Indian census lists over 11 million child labourers

Role of NGO To assist the state/district authorities for successful implementation Of the Action Plan and to act as a resource base in the district To counsel and motivate parents to send their children to school To inform authorities about the areas of concentration of child labour and to assist the govt. machinery to identify, withdraw, enroll in schools and rehabilitate child labourers. To create awareness on the importance of child rights and to create an enabling atmosphere for the exercise of such rights by the children themselves by forming the children clubs
