BUT verbs that end in –EE don’t lose an –E. SPELLING OF VERB + –ING : SPELLING OF VERB + –ING Examples: PLAN planning STOP stopping SIT  sitting GET  getting RUN  running Exceptions: PLAY  playing SHOW showing RULE 3 When a one-syllable verb ends in consonant +vowel + consonant, we double the consonant. BUT if the final consonant is –Y or –W, it is not doubled. If the final syllable is not stressed, we do not double the final consonant.
