Slide1:  THE SCOTTSVILLE AND ALLEN COUNTY FAITH COALITION PRESENTS:  PRESENTS BUILDING FENCES:  BUILDING FENCES A Faith Based Initiative GETTING STARTED:  GETTING STARTED LETS START A COALITION:  LETS START A COALITION Activity Break up into groups Think about the steps you would take to start a faith based coalition HOW WE DID IT:  HOW WE DID IT SCHOOL SURVEYS:  SCHOOL SURVEYS Recent surveys conducted in Allen County Schools by the Communities That Care (CTC) Youth survey and the Kentucky Incentives for Prevention (KIP) Survey provide a basis of knowledge of the increased ATOD use among our youth Slide8:  ONE KEY COMPONENT OF THE SURVEYS CONDUCTED THE FAITH FACTOR:  THE FAITH FACTOR 55% of 10th Graders report high belief in a moral order, with 59% reporting religious participation within the community STRONG RELIGIOUS COMMUNITY:  STRONG RELIGIOUS COMMUNITY Although we live in a relatively small community with a population of approximately 19,000, there are over 100 local churches. DRUG FREE COMMUNITIES GRANT:  DRUG FREE COMMUNITIES GRANT Our Local ASAP Board and the DFC served as a spring board for the coalition. One of the objectives of the DFC grant was to contact 5-7 churches. Once we looked at the strong influence the church had in Allen County, along with the school surveys, we decided to have a special event for all the pastors FAITH BASED RETREAT:  FAITH BASED RETREAT In July of 2005, we invited every pastor or faith leader to attend a one day event at Barren River State Park PURPOSE OF EVENT:  PURPOSE OF EVENT AWARENESS We gave the pastors the facts concerning ATOD abuse using the KIP and CTC surveys. MOTIVATION At the end of the day, our goal was to motivate church leaders to become involved in their local churches INVOLVEMENT We discussed various levels of involvement. FAITH BASED WORKGROUP:  FAITH BASED WORKGROUP In August of 2005, as a part of the ASAP Board and DFC, a faith-based workgroup was formed for anyone that wanted to take the retreat at Barren River to the next level and continue reaching out to the local churches ASAP GAVE ITS BLESSING:  ASAP GAVE ITS BLESSING In January of 2006, because of the overwhelming interest and involvement of the faith-based workgroup, the ASAP Board approved the group in forming its own coalition. THE COALITION WAS FORMED:  THE COALITION WAS FORMED GUIDING THEME FROM ITS INCEPTION:  GUIDING THEME FROM ITS INCEPTION Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God (2 Cor. 1:3-4). COALITION’S VISION:  COALITION’S VISION A COMMUNITY THAT IS CENTERED IN FAITH AND FREE FROM ALL ADDICTIONS THE MISSION:  THE MISSION The mission of the Coalition is to promote the elimination of alcohol, tobacco and other drug use in the community through education, prevention and intervention, with attention to programs and activities focusing on faith, but also advocating for environmental changes and public policies supportive of alcohol, tobacco and drug free living. In addition the Coalition will engage and assist people of faith in the development of caring communities that will promote prevention, treatment, and recovery from all addictions. Once the coalition was formed, we needed funding to progress:  Once the coalition was formed, we needed funding to progress THE NEED FOR FUNDING:  THE NEED FOR FUNDING Champions United Way Funding to conduct a Faith Partners Training MAINTAIN CHURCH INVOLVEMENT :  MAINTAIN CHURCH INVOLVEMENT FAITH PARTNERS TRAINING :  FAITH PARTNERS TRAINING With the help of the RUSH Center of the Johnston Institute, we conducted a three-part training for area churches. 1. Site Visit 2. Leadership Training 3. Two day team training Learning How To Make A Difference!!!:  Learning How To Make A Difference!!! Bringing in Reinforcements:  Bringing in Reinforcements Danny Fenwick of the Kentucky National Guard, along with Doug Eberhart, President of United Way of Southern Kentucky, and Noel Jordan, former Coordinator of the Allen Monroe Baptist Association CHURCHES AT WORK:  CHURCHES AT WORK Stony Point Church Team along with members of the Rush Center This group went on to implement a mini-grant that targets tobacco use among teenagers:  Stony Point Church Team along with members of the Rush Center This group went on to implement a mini-grant that targets tobacco use among teenagers SCOPE AND PURPOSE OF TRAINING:  SCOPE AND PURPOSE OF TRAINING To develop a team ministry within the local church. The ministry could focus on prevention, intervention, and/or recovery. In order to get a better handle on what individual congregations needed, a survey was done in the local congregations. Approximately 20 churches participated in the faith partners training KEY COMPONENTS FOR THE SUCCESS OF THE SCOTTSVILLE ALLEN COUNTY FAITH COALITION:  KEY COMPONENTS FOR THE SUCCESS OF THE SCOTTSVILLE ALLEN COUNTY FAITH COALITION Slide32:  The Hand of God Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. (Psalm 127:1) Pastoral leadership among coalition members In our case, the director is also a senior pastor of a local church Ongoing partnership with ASAP and its director Invaluable assistance from the team I have with me today. IMPACT:  IMPACT 2006 KIP SURVEY REPORTS The new school surveys reported a drop in almost every drug category. For example, 30 day marijuana use among 10th graders dropped from 18% to 9% and Binge drinking dropped from 25% to 14 % among 10th graders IMPACT CONT.:  IMPACT CONT. Churches working together for a common goal Approximately 25 churches work with the coalition at various levels to address substance abuse in their congregations. IMPACT CONT.:  IMPACT CONT. Faith Based Recovery Programs Journey to Freedom—7 week course that helps people to find victory over life-controlling issues. (This program is offered as a partnership with the local YMCA) Celebrate Recovery of Scottsville—A program designed to help people overcome hurts, hang ups, and habits. (This program is offered weekly through the sponsorship of the coalition in coordination with several local churches) IMPACT CONT.:  IMPACT CONT. Several churches have implemented mini-grants which targets youth in their congregation One church educated their youth on the dangers of tobacco Another church held events at the bowling alley and YMCA to target youth throughout the community on the dangers of experimenting with drugs.
