Ouray was born near Taos Pueblo in 1833. Chipeta was born in 1830 near Ignacio. Ouray and Chipeta married in 1859, and when Ouray’s father died, Ouray became Chief. In 1879 Chief Ouray kept the Meeker Massacre from becoming a war. Nathan Meeker tried to force the Indians to be farmers and wanted their land plowed and used for horse racing. The Indians resisted. Mr. Meeker asked for troops to be sent from the Army. Thirteen men from the Army were killed by the Indians on their way. Nathan Meeker and ten others were killed also. In 1880 a treaty was signed and said that all Utes be moved out of Colorado to a reservation in Utah. Chief Ouray died in 1880. 25 years after he died, Chipeta married a Commoguech. Chipeta died in 1924 and was buried near the town of Ouray, just south of Montrose. Chief Ouray Chipeta Alferd Packer:  Alferd Packer Born in 1842 in Pennsylvania. Alferd Packer was a shoemaker. He came to Colorado to get rich. In 1873 Mr. Packer and several other men headed into the mountains. While they were in the mountains they ran into a snowstorm. The men soon ran out of food. Alferd Packer, came out of the mountains alone weeks later. He told his story of how he cooked and ate the other people in his party. He was tried for cannibalism and spent 15 years in Canyon City State Prison. He died in 1907 in Denver, CO and is buried in Littleton Cemetery. Alferd Packer Horace and “Baby Doe” Tabor:  Horace and “Baby Doe” Tabor Horace Tabor was born in 1830 in Vermont. The Tabors came to Colorado to make their fortune in Leadville. Horace Tabor met Elizabeth “Baby Doe” McCourt in 1881. Mr. Tabor help build a lot of early Denver and “Baby Doe” worked the Matchless Mine where they made their millions. Horace died in 1899 and “Baby Doe" died in 1935 in her cabin frozen next to the Matchless Mine. Horace Tabor “Baby Doe” Tabor Emily Griffith:  Emily Griffith 1868-1947 Emily was a teacher from Nebraska. Her family moved to Denver, CO in 1904 where she began teaching. Ms. Griffith was recognized by the Denver Public Schools for all of her work with children. On May 11, 1916, Denver Public Schools gave Emily an empty school building at 13th and Welton. She opened her doors to the Opportunity School on September 9, 1916. They took her picture and turned it into stain glass and put it in the Denver State Capitol. She taught thousands of people, children and adults how to read and write. Emily and her sister were murdered on June 19, 1947 in her cabin in the mountains. No one knows why and the murderer was never caught.
