The components manufactured by powder metallurgy process have a unique applications,. The powder metallurgical products are used in all type of applications . PROCESS OF POWDER METALLURGY: PROCESS OF POWDER METALLURGY MANUFACTURING OF POWDER BLENDING COMPACTING INFILTERATION IMPREGATION MANUFACTURING OF POWDER: MANUFACTURING OF POWDER MACHINING :- This method is mainly used to produce filings, turnings , chips etc. CRUSHING :- This method is used for disintegration of oxides and brittle materials. Various crushing instruments such as stamps, hammers, jaw crushers etc. are used. MILLING :- This is one of the most useful method with which various fine grades of powders can be produced. Milling or grinding can be done by using ball mill, rod mill, impact mill, disk mill, vortex mill etc. GRAINING :- This method uses the same principle as above. ATPMIZATON :- The principle of this method consist of disintegration of steam of molten metal into the fine particles . BLENDING OR MIXING: BLENDING OR MIXING It is an operation through mixing of different powders of the same composition or of different compositions. The aim of blending is to obtain homogeneous mixture of powder . This helps to improve compacting and sintering properties. TYPES OF BLENDING: TYPES OF BLENDING Y-CONE TYPE BLENDER DOUBLE CONE BLENDER POWDER COMPACTION: POWDER COMPACTION Powder compaction is the process forming metal powder compact of the desired shape. The aim of compacting is to consolidate the powder into desired shape . It is also decided the porosity level SINTERING: SINTERING The process is used to improve strength of green compact. Sintering is one of the essential last step in the manufacture of powder metallurgy part. It consists of heating the green compact at a temperature below the highest melting constituent. IMPREGNATION: IMPREGNATION Sintered part may be impregnated with oil grease wax or other lubricating material, in case self lubricating properties are desired. This is done in order to:- improve corrosion resistance improve machinability INFILTRATION: INFILTRATION Normal sintering process the density of powder metallurgy product is about 77% but after infiltration density is close to 100%. Infiltration increased strength, hardness and density not obtained by straight sintering. APPLICATIONS: APPLICATIONS REFRACTORY METALS:- Components produced by using refractory metals as tungsten, molybdenum and tantalum are used in electric light bulb, fluorescent lamps, x-ray tubes etc. AUTOMOTIVE :- The large group of powder metallurgy parts are used automobile industries. The application includes porous bearings, slide bearing, self lubricated bearings. AEROSPACE:- powder metallurgy parts are used in space in rocket, missiles, satellite etc. ATOMIC ENERGY APPLICATION:- powder metallurgy parts are used in nuclear reactor . Sintered material are used for atomic reactors and rockets. DEFENCE APPLICATION :- powder metallurgy parts and metal powder are used in rockets<, missiles, bullets etc. ADVANTAGES: ADVANTAGES A combination of metal and nonmetalic material is possible. For production filters, bearings a control on the amount of porosity is possible. High density parts are produced. Component any required composition can be produced. Production of cemented carbide tool is possible only this methods. LIMITATIONS: LIMITATIONS Very large sized components can not be produced. Porous metals tend to oxide rapidly. The metallurgical parts shows poor plastic properties. It is difficult to produce high purity powder. Due to porosity mechanical properties are difficult obtain.
