Painting of the Day #18 Suprematists

Suprematists

War is great for art. The schools of thought produced by the massive scale of death during WW1 combined with the artistic advances of Fauvism and Cubism created a hot bed of artistic thought. Between 1910 and 1920 many small but important art movements were created. Suprematism, Cubism, German Expressionism, Futurism, The Blue Rider Group, Neo-Plasticism (De Stijl), Dada, the beginnings of Surrealism...the western hemisphere was a Modernist wonderland! WHeeeeeee! Not an example of ‘good art’

Suprematism is Super. "To the Suprematist, the visual phenomena of the objective world are, in themselves, meaningless; the significant thing is feeling, as such, quite apart from the environment in which it is called forth." -Wassily Kandinsky 'I felt only night within me and it was then that I conceived the new art, which I called Suprematism'. -Kasmir Malevich As far as form goes, Black Square on White is a complete reduction of the geometric study that Cezanne popularized in the 1880’s. Finally! We don’t have to deal with reduction of form anymore, you can’t simplify more than this.

Suprematism focused on the internal movements of the personality and the focused on compositional relationships that the practitioners felt were accurate. The color usage was very loaded and can be interpreted in many ways...and no...this isn’t your dad making out with a sea turtle. Black Square and Red Square Oil on Canvas 1915 28x171/2 MoMA, NY
