from the studio of:  from the studio of Shaun F Parker Slide2:  Every Thursday in Nairobi, a group of artists would converge at Mary’s studio in Kibegare Valley to paint. It was always such an enjoyable day - filled with banter, gossip and philosophizing, and a leisurely lunch on the verandah with wine, champagne cocktails or Pimm’s. All my work done in 2006 and early 2007 was greatly influenced by Mary and the Thursday Group. The thick layers make you want to reach out and feel the painting – stroke the nose, brush the cheek. I like people to touch my works, and experience the whole of the painting, not just the images. It makes the work more personal. There is something sensual about being able to enjoy the tactile side of paintings. They were right. (We did, though, venture to the hotel next door when we ran out of Bloody Mary mix one brunch… but I don’t think that counts…) Slide30:  Beach House is (…surprisingly…) situated right on the beach… It is on the tiny island of Lamu off Kenya’s coast. . It was a scorching hot afternoon when I did these concept sketches. I sat in the shade of a huge yellow fever tree which partially stuck out over the roof deck. The branches were very low, and I had to crawl into the shade on all fours. Slide31:  about the artist South African born artist and architect Shaun Parker was first exposed to art as a form of expression while at boarding school. However, finding himself in a conservative society where art was not necessarily frowned upon, but where a career in art was most definitely not seen as a suitable option, Shaun’s love for art and ability as an artist were not encouraged during this period. After completing high school, he went on to obtain his undergraduate degree in Architecture at the University of Port Elizabeth in South Africa before spending a year traveling in England and Ireland. On his return to South Africa in 1997, he took up a position in an architectural firm in Johannesburg, while his weekends and evenings were spent working for an interior design company.  In 1999 Shaun moved to Gaborone, Botswana, where he worked as an architect, concentrating on community based projects. It was in Botswana that Shaun met his life partner and also seriously took up painting. In 2001 he moved to Kiev, Ukraine with his partner. He continued painting, and started attending studio painting sessions led by Ukrainian artist Zoya Lehrman. Shaun found the rich cultural life in Kiev extremely stimulating, and was fortunate enough to meet some of Ukraine’s leading artists, becoming a frequent visitor to their studios. Living in Eastern Europe afforded Shaun the opportunity to travel extensively across Europe and countries within the former Soviet Union, both geographical areas being greatly inspirational to him. Shaun has shown his works at an exhibition held by the United Nations Development Program on World AIDS day in Kiev, Ukraine, in 2001; at RaMoMA in Nairobi, Kenya; in Palm Springs, California; and at private showings. His works hang in private collections in capital cities across the globe, including Amsterdam, Beijing, Riyadh, Tel Aviv, Vienna and Washington DC, and countries as far spread as, Namibia, South Africa, Botswana , Swaziland and Kenya. Shaun works primarily with acrylics and/or oils on canvas. He has worked in a variety of formats. For Shaun, it is the act of painting which is at the crux of his work, and the interaction between artist and canvas. To him, the way in which the paint is applied, whether using pallet knife, brush or hand, is critical, as are the artist’s frame of mind and the feeling of the canvas – the way in which the canvas and the artist communicate with each other – evidence of which can be found in his contemporary abstract expressionist works. Shaun (right) with Mary Collis of RaMoMA at the opening of his solo art exhibition. RaMoMA, Nairobi, Kenya. February 2007 Contact Details: shaun@chrisandshaun.com While in Ukraine Shaun decided to pursue a Masters program in International Business Management and subsequently, in 2003, he registered as a student of the University of London. In 2005 the couple (together with their two adopted Ukrainian street dogs) moved to Nairobi, Kenya, and for Shaun this was a very fulfilling and inspiring return to his home continent. He attended weekly studio painting sessions with co-founder of RaMoMA (Rahimtulla Museum of Modern Art - in Nairobi, Kenya) and premier Kenyan artist, Mary Collis, and other artists based in Nairobi. He also took an active interest in the Arts in Kenya, supporting the wonderful work that the various organizations are doing. Shaun completed his Masters Degree in 2006, developing a five year business plan for RaMoMA as his dissertation for the degree. He immediately started work as a budget specialist for an international aid organization with offices in Nairobi. In July 2007, Shaun and his partner will move to Jakarta, Indonesia.
