Poverty – Around the World and at Home:  Poverty – Around the World and at Home Alex, John, Fayaz, Evan, and Jeremy Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School Okotoks, Alberta, Canada December 9, 2005 Poverty:  Poverty “A condition where a person does not have sufficient economic and other resources to live with dignity, choices and power, which support full participation in society.” Poverty is…:  Poverty is… Hunger Lack of shelter Not having a job Fear of the future Living one day at a time Being sick and not being able to see a doctor Not being able to go to school and not knowing how to read Losing a child to illness brought about by unclean water POWERLESSNESS, lack of REPRESENTATION, lack of FREEDOM and CHOICES Global Poverty – Facts:  Global Poverty – Facts Half the world – nearly three billion people – live on less than two dollars a day. 1.2 billion live on less than one dollar a day. 1.3 billion have no access to clean water. 3 billion have no access to sanitation. 2 billion have no access to electricity. The world’s 3 richest people have wealth greater than the combined Gross Domestic Product (the value of all goods and services) of the world’s 48 poorest nations. Nearly a billion people entered the 21st century unable to read a book or sign their names. 1 billion children live in poverty (1 in 2 children in the world). 640 million live without adequate shelter, 400 million have no access to safe water, 270 million have no access to health services. 10.6 million died in 2003 before they reached the age of 5. Close to 60% of all immigrants in Calgary are poor. 18% that immigrated before 1986 and 42% immigrated after 1986.
