Edger Allen Poe: Gothic Literature By Daniel Genega

Poe’s Biography: Part I • Born on January 19, 1809 (Giordano). • His mother, Elizabeth Poe, died when he was two years old (Giordano). • He was adopted by a merchant named John Allen, whom despite having a respectable amount of money, was financially neglectful of Edgar (Giordano). When Edgar went to the University of Virginia, John didn’t send him enough money (Giordano). When Edgar went to West Point, John didn’t send him any money (Giordano). When Edgar was a struggling author in 1831, John rejected Edger’s pleas for financial aid (Giordano). When John finally died in 1834, he left Edgar out of his will (Giordano).

Poe’s Biography: Part II • Went to the University of Virginia in 1826, but had to drop out because he became an alcoholic and fell into debt (Giordano). • In 1836, Poe married his cousin, Virginia Clemm, who died in 1847 (Giordano) • He died on October 7, 1849 (Giordano).

Gothic Literature : Death • Death is an important aspect in Poe’s literature (Smith) • In real life, as Poe’s loved ones died, Poe’s stories became bleaker (Jordan). • In many of Poe’s stories, at least one important character is dead (Smith) • In Ligea, the main character’s lover, Ligea is deceased, just like Poe’s own wife (Smith). Similarly, in The Fall of The House of Usher, However, Ligea seemingly reappears from beyond the grave (Smith).

Gothic Literature: Insanity • In The Fall of the House of Usher, one of the major characters, Roderick, is heavily implied to be going insane (Smith). • Poe’s real life alcoholism and opium addiction might have been a factor in the darkness of Poe’s stories (Jordan). • In the tell-tale heart, the narrarator kills an old man because he is disgusted by the appearance of the old man’s eye (London).

Gothic Literature: Creepy Settings • Gothic Stories are often set in spooky places (Smith). • The titular house in The Fall of the House of Usher is described as “sentient,” and the narrator goes on to describe the decrepit state of the house (Smith) • Most of Poe’s stories are set during nighttime (London).
