PLUMBING INDUSTRY HAILS ANSI ACTION ROCKVILLE, Md., July 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Calling it "one of the most significant advances in the plumbing industry in the last quarter century," the Mechanical Contractors Association of America (MCAA) and the National Association of Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors (NAPHCC) hailed the recent decision of the Appeals Board of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to approve a new national consensus standard for the plumbing industry. MCAA and NAPHCC jointly sponsored and co-chaired the A40 Accredited Standards Committee which was responsible for development of the 300- plus page document. The new standard, ANSI A40-1993, Safety Requirements for Plumbing, will establish the industry's only ANSI-approved national code requirement governing all aspects of safe plumbing installations. "The breadth and depth of commitment and involvement demonstrated by the members of the A40 Accredited Standards Committee is a testament to the importance the industry as a whole places on this issue. Gorman, a retired member of the California Pipe Trades Council, Patrick J. "Although they did not live to see the fulfillment of their dream, this achievement would not have been possible without the earlier contribution of NAPHCC's George Klein and MCAA's Sterling Neblett and Vincent Doyle," Ceren said. The A40 standard represents the first national consensus standard established for the plumbing industry since the mid-1950s. "By its action, ANSI has taken a significant step forward in promoting an extremely high safety standard for all plumbing installations," said MCAA President Foster McCarl Jr. The A40 standard replaces the earlier A40.8, which was originally published in 1955. Key plumbing industry leaders celebrated the ANSI action as a milestone for the industry, noting the committee's dedication to win approval of the standard. "We have persevered in our efforts to secure approval of this standard for more than 20 years because we believed this document was critically important to our industry's progress and advancement," said Tim Ceren, president of NAPHCC, "and we are extremely pleased that the hard work and dedication of so many groups and individuals has finally paid off." A 15-member panel, representing a broad-based industry coalition including plumbing-related associations, labor, and technical experts, cooperated in the development of the A40 document. The members of the A40 Accredited Standards Committee are: Mechanical Contractors Association of
America and National Association of Plumbing-Heating- Cooling Contractors (co-chairs), American Iron and Steel Institute, American Society of Plumbing Engineers, Cast Iron Soil Pipe Institute, Copper Development Association, International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials, Laborers International Union of North America, NSF International, Plastic Pipe and Fittings Association, Plumbing Manufacturers Institute, and the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry of the United States and Canada. We are deeply grateful to the ANSI staff for its assistance and professionalism throughout the entire standard-making procedure." "Over the years, there have been countless individuals who have contributed their time, their knowledge and their experience to ensure that the resulting standard was of the highest possible caliber," said Ceren. Higgins of P.J. and NAPHCC's George Kauffman, a long-standing member of the committee. The A40 Accredited Standards Committee will publish the new standard as soon as possible and will be responsible for implementing procedures to keep the document viable and current. "This was truly a team effort," said McCarl. In addition, three individuals, John P. Adherence to the ANSI standard allows contractors to assure their workers, their clients and the American people that their plumbing installations are being implemented according to the quality levels deemed appropriate in the industry. By virtue of its independent and impartial status, ANSI-approval of a standard is widely recognized as the most significant certification available. Scarano, a plastic pipe consultant from Yardley, Pa., served on the committee. Ceren saluted the current and past chairmen of the A40 Committee for their leadership. The ANSI designation is indicative of broad-based consensus review by, and support of, the approved standard by pre-eminent industry experts and the general public.
The ANSI approval comes after more than 20 years of intensive effort by a coalition of industry representatives to develop a comprehensive safety document for the plumbing trades.
