Plants and their parts A plant is a system. Roots, stem, leaves, flowers and fruits are the main parts of a plant. These parts differentiate plants from animals. Each plant part has its own functions.

These roots are known as storage roots. Carrots, turnips and sweet potatoes are examples of plants that have storage roots.

5. If one part of the plant is missing, it will not be able to function properly as a system. 6. Plants without leaves will not be able to carry out photosynthesis. 7. Flowering plants without flowers will generally not be able to reproduce itself. 8. Plants without fruits will not be able to be grown from seeds. Without its stem, a plant would not have any support or be able to transport water, mineral salts and food to the rest of the plant parts. Without roots, the plant will also be unable to take in water and mineral salts from the ground. Xylem cells are cells that transport water in the stem. Phloem cells are cells in the stem that transport food or sugar produced by the leaves.

The leaf appears green due to the presence of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll traps energy from light. A red or orange colored leaf is able to carry out photosynthesis if there is hidden chlorophyll lying below the coloured pigments. Unlike photosynthesis, respiration takes place at all times at all independent of chlorophyll and light. In the process of respiration, oxygen is used and carbon dioxide and water are given off. Do you know why the air in the park is fresher in the day? It is because plants are able to carry out photosynthesis so carbon dioxide is removed from the air and oxygen is released into the air.

Unlike photosynthesis, respiration takes place at all times at all independent of chlorophyll and light.

In the process of respiration, oxygen is used and carbon dioxide and water are given off.
