DOC SICILIA A quick vade mecum Why DOC Sicilia and no more IGT Sicilia? It will ensure a more systematic control of wine production by accurate and professional certification bodies that can best safeguard Sicilian producers. It will lead to the creation of a consortium for the protection, development, revitalization and promotion of the Sicily brand with economic resources and a common direction for all Sicilian producers. It will support and enhance small production areas giving rise to specific Sicilian terroirs, helping small existing DOC wines to promote themselves by adding the name of the territory to that of DOC Sicilia, e.g. DOC Sicilia Menfi, DOC Sicilia Noto.

Planeta in Sicily Established in 1995, Planeta is a Sicilian wine producer built on a long agricultural tradition handed down since 1500 through 17 generations in the area between Sambuca di Sicilia and Menfi.Today Planeta represents not just one, but six ways of developing the territory, in six different settings.There are, in fact, six Planeta wine producing estates, each one with a specific research and development project. Ulmo at Sambuca di Sicilia, Dispensa at Menfi, Dorilli at Vittoria, Buonivini at Noto, Feudo di Mezzo at Etna in Castiglione di Sicilia, and finally, La Baronia at Capo Milazzo. These are the Planeta locations, comprising a total surface area of more than 350 hectares of vineyards.

Located near Sambuca di Sicilia, the Ulmo estate, inaugurated in 1995, is Planeta’s first winery. Surrounded by 93 hectares of vineyards where several grape varieties are grown with a wine cellar built just a few meters away from the16th-century farmhouse – the Baglio – which has always been owned by the family. Iter Vitis Museum - dedicated to the history of Sicilian wine, La Segreta Nature Footpath - three routes along the vineyards, revealing surprising landscapes and pockets of wilderness. The upper layers are more calcareous, with portions of dark loam rich in organic matter. Maroccoli: the soil is on average clayey and rich in silt.

“La Dispensa” is the historical heart of the Planeta family. Two wine cellars lie at the center of the family’s activities: the Cantina Piccola, created for red wines, and the Cantina Grande, wholly devoted to wines aged in stainless steel. La Biblioteca (the Library), which houses hundreds of books dedicated to the grapevine, from the 18th century to the most recent publications. Infernotto, a vault that holds a selection of the best labels from around the world and the complete collection of all Planeta vintages. MENFI | Dispensa Soils Dispensa: medium depth, of average calcareous content with mixed yellow and dark-gray clays, and fine texture. Gurra; one zone is composed of red sands with scarce skeletal soil, and one characterized by very clayey calcareous soils. VITTORIA | Dorilli Dorilli stands at the heart of the production area of Cerasuolo di Vittoria, near the Dirillo river that inspired its name. We restored the old winery and a series of apartments, taken from the farmhouse of the early '900 in the middle of the vineyard full of Nero d'Avola and Frappato. Cerasuolo di Vittoria is an ancient and distinctive wine. Since 2006 it can boast the DOCG appelation, the first and only wine to have received it in Sicily. Soils Composed mainly of red sands originating from what are called marine terraces, they are approximately one meter deep. Below this layer, there is another layer of tufa rich in limestone, which is important for the plants’ water balance. NOTO | Buonivini Noto district is devoted to the native vines only, Nero d’Avola and Moscato di Noto, processed entirely in the modern “invisible winery”, well integrated with the landscape. From 2008 vintage Santa Cecilia is DOC Noto and Moscato became Passito di Noto. The “Case Sparse” - scattered houses - are small rural houses with an amaranth red finish that dot the vineyard. They have been renovated according to local traditions and decorated with recycled materials. Soils Buonivini: White, very calcareous soils, with a rich, small-sized skeleton texture characterized by an extremely high water retention capacity. Vineyards: Sciara Nuova, Montelaguardia Year of vineyards plantation: 2008 Winery: Feudo di Mezzo Hectares: 16 First Harvest: 2009 ETNA | Feudo di Mezzo Since the 2012 vintage the grapes have been processed in the new winery of Feudo di Mezzo. The winery is located in the Feudo di Mezzo area, centrally placed in respect of our Sciara Nuova and Montelaguardia vineyards, not far from the small village of Passopisciaro. The site is in a spectacular position, within a lava flow of 1566, like a stone garden. The building is respectful of the countryside and possesses key features in a modern style. The black stone of Etna is thus the predominant architectural element even in the barrel store which has been built like an old stone quarry thus combining bio-architecture and cultural recycling. Sciara Nuova: 870 meters above sea level, in the municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia where, due to the altitude, the first grapevines planted were mainly white grapes. At the moment there are about 6 hectares and a fine old winery that will be transformed into an excellent place to receive guests. Montelaguardia: Running alongside the Circumetnea railway, there is a small valley of about 10 hectares. Its soil is perfect to bring out the best from grapes grown on the volcano. Feudo di Mezzo Winery and Sciara Nuova Vineyards Soils The soils have a perfect exposure. Mount Etna’s volcanic soils originated from the slow erosion of the lava stone, ash, and organic matter, and are rich in minerals. The stones of the buildings, millstone and ancient terraces are black too.
CAPO MILAZZO| La Baronia Vineyards: La Baronia Year of vineyards plantation: 2011 Hectares: 8 Production: Mamertino Capo Milazzo, an extraordinary and distinctive place, it has been a center of viticulture since Roman times. The Mamertino wine grown here once delighted Julius Caesar himself.The estate at the heart of this project is La Baronia on Capo Milazzo. The pilot project for the recovery of MAMERTINO wine will pursue a viticulture that is carried out in perfect harmony with the local territory, without irrigation. It will use training techniques typical of seaside areas, like gobelet training. Great attention will go into the details. At present the company is planning 8 hectares for vines and 20 for old olive trees. Of these, the first 4 hectares have been planted in complete respect for the discipline, that is 60% Nero d’Avola and 40% Nocera. To these will be added, as experiments, about 1,000 plants of the three varieties Vitraruolo, Lucignolo and Catanese Nera. These vines will be subjected to careful research investigations and to studies aimed at fully using the characteristics of the territory

Capparrina 98 hectars cultivar: Nocellara del Belice, Biancolilla, Cerasuola The Planeta olive grove extends for 98 hectares in the Capparrina district in Menfi, a natural oasis of great beauty, and sloping towards the sea. The olive trees are interspersed with dwarf palms before descending to a beach of the whitest sand dotted with sea lilies where sightings of the CarettaCaretta turtles are frequent. The area comprises 130 hectares, a true paradise of Mediterranean flora and fauna, a frequent halt for flocks of migrating birds heading towards nearby Africa and habitat for some now rare creatures such as the porcupine, the hoopoe and various birds of prey. The varieties of olive cultivated at Capparrina are those of local tradition; Nocellara del Belice, Biancolilla and Cerasuola. Planeta extra virgin olive oil is DOP Val di Mazara. Tasting Notes and Food Matching Pale straw with hints of green reflections. Austere and polite. Aromas of ripe white melon and white peach Etna, followed by sensations sweet, almost white chocolate and meringue, a mineral component gradually appeared in the wine. The palate is thin but not too bulky full and unexpectedly soft. A nice acidity enhances the freshness. Final unpredictable for the return of dense floreal notes. Ideal with sea food first courses, with shell fish and with light soups based on vegetables or with fish soups.

The wood is shy but well balanced. Soft, round, energetic, full. His balance is characterized by a fine acidity, the fresh flavour and substantial extract. Excellent with smoked fish or meat. After a few years of maturation, also with herby cheese.

Abundance of red fruits like plum aromas, ripe blackberry typical of western Sicily Nero d’Avola blended with scents of cocoa, and almost sacher cake. The wood is fully integrated until it disappeared. Soft tannins and roundness characterizes the wine. Ideal for roast lamb and wild hare. Great on grilled meats.

This is a red wine of great density, structure and balance, produced in limited quantity from selected vineyards. Intertwining of spices, red fruit, black cherry with accents of leather, earth, cocoa, marine and mineral notes. The frame is balmy almost minty. The mouth is full, aggressive, energetic, clear and substantial tannin structure supported by dense and deep. The tannin of the wood blends well with the tannins of the wine that prevails. Long and enjoyable final: concentration and elegance in harmony. Main dishes based on mushrooms and braised food, beef fillet with black pepper, game, wild boar.
