Love, Your PIC Slide3: Volunteer Opportunities at UBC 3 Philanthropy Corner Each month the philanthropic events and causes that the Sororities of UBC are involved will be showcased! This month’s focus is on Alpha Gamma Delta and Delta Gamma. It has been a busy but rewarding year for the sisters of Delta Gamma at UBC! In the fall, Delta Gambling, a Texas-style poker tournament, raised over $400 for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind under Delta Gamma’s umbrella philanthropy platform, Service for Sight. The Holiday Dinner raised a similar amount of money, enabling DG to “Adopt a Family,” giving a less-fortunate family Christmas presents and food for the holiday season. In addition, the sisters gift-wrapped for CNIB and participated in the Run for a Cure. Currently, the DGs are volunteering for the Crane Production Laboratory, which records books on tape for blind students of UBC, as well as raising money for a new HIV/AIDS hospital in Mozambique in the upcoming UNICEF Gala. On February 24, the sisters’ largest annual event of the year will be held: Anchorsplash! They look forward to seeing everybody there! In this past year, Alpha Gamma Delta has participated in many Greek fundraising events such as Trick-or-Eat and making sandwiches for the homeless with the FIJI Fraternity. In addition, Alpha Gam had a team in the JDRF Ride For a Cure, raising over $600! The team was sponsored through bake sales, a pasta dinner by donation, and selling JDRF support bracelets for the foundation. Our annual events in raising money for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, the principle Alpha Gamma Delta charity, are the summer Alpha Gam Beach Slam, raising $500, and the winter Alpha Gam Slam. This year’s Slam raised a total of just over $2,000, quadrupling the sisters’ last year’s proceeds! All the Sisters of Alpha Gamma Delta are always excited to attend Greek philanthropic events and continue efforts in raising money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. UBC International Week 2006 is almost here and we need your help! Join one of the most exciting events on campus and help celebrate internationalism! UBC International Week 2006 is a week-long celebration of events that will take place from March 20th to March 24th, 2006. The purpose of the event is to showcase and highlight the multicultural community that exists at UBC and to involve all UBC students in the festivities! Last year over two thousand UBC students attended the week-long series of events and we had about 300 volunteers!!! We are looking for volunteers to help out with the planning and organization of this exciting event. Come to an information session and sign up for one of the many sub-committees that will be offered. Last year, the events included: an international fashion show called International Flair, a music/dance show that included an 'International Idol' singing competition - all known as International Beat, an international speaker and film series, traditional cultural storytelling, dance workshops, an open house to discover International House, an International Opportunities Fair, and the week ended with an event known as Festiva! Festiva is like the grand finale of the week, including all kinds of talent performances, international food and lots of fun!
