1. Photo Analysis Essay Art can be very pleasing to the eye. Some painters make their paintings or photographs come to life with different meanings. I am going to be analyzing a picture of 3 family members who I assume are immigrants that are looking towards the Statue of Liberty at the start of their new life. My photo analysis will not only describe the people in the photo but it will provide a different direction as in how to determine what the photo is and what it really means. Whenever I look at this picture it makes me happy. To me the photo represents an immigrant family that had moved to America to seek a better life. It looks like they are standing on a boat from the way that the Statue of Liberty is proportioned into the picture. The family is probably excited about their new movement and their new life that they will be starting. This picture looks like it was set back in the 1800s or sometime around then. You can analyze this because of the colors used for the photo and how the people in the picture are dressed. They aren’t wearing anything that we see today. They have on different kind of hats and the woman has a long skirt with a different type of shoes. This must have been around the time when immigrants were first moving to America to better their life. The time of day this photo probably took place was around noon or so because you can see the people’s shadows on the boat floor. The picture size itself is a pretty decent size. It isn’t too small or too big so it gives some meaning to what the photo was trying to say. Along with what I had mentioned earlier about the Statue of Liberty, the author made the statue in the far background. I’m assuming he did this to show that they weren’t close to their new life but they were farther than what they had

2. been in the past. The statue also shows that the people are coming to somewhere where they will have freedom. This photo is very blurry. If it was took by a photographer than the camera probably wouldn’t have been the best since it was took back around the 1800s. Although if it was painted than the author probably used the blurriness to emphasize on different objects. The author could’ve also used the blurriness to show that it was an old photo and that it wasn’t around a more recent time. Another aspect of this photo is that it raises some questions. I wonder why the author decided to portray this family and what was his reason? Also if he were to recreate the photo again today I wonder if he would capture it differently. Would there be more colors? Would there be more people? Would the picture be clearer? Also to me I think that the photo is captured rather than posed. By the way the people are standing it looks as if they are just enjoying their nice new life coming to the U.S. It looks like the event just happened as to the person taking the photo just making them pose a certain way. In conclusion, art can be very pleasing to the eye. Some publishers make their paintings or photographs come to life with different meanings. You can view a picture and may come up with many different assumptions as to what you think is happening in a photo. My photo analysis not only described the people in the photo but it provided a different direction as in how to determine what the photo is and what it really means. You don’t just look at the photo and say yeah there is a family standing there, they might be in New York because of the Statue

3. of Liberty. You actually can look at the photos dimensions and so much more to see what is really taking place in the photo.
