Food and Agriculture Organization FAO October 1945 Agricultural development. improves nutrition Objectives Largest autonomous agency within the UN Pursues to secure food. Fights against poverty and hunger

FAO in Peru  Initiated technical assistance activities in1960s  The FAO Representation has 115 members.  The representation is in charge of 29 projects.  Has installed 12 field offices in the intervention regions.

Priority Issues  The priority issues identified by the Peruvian Government for the assistance of the FAO are:  Food Security and Poverty Reduction.  Formulation of Sector Policies and Rural Development.  Environmental Risk Management to Climate Change and Sustainable Development.

Access to adequate food Avoid growth retardation of children Objectives Ensure the sustainability of the food system Achieve increased productivity or avoid wasting food

Proyects Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP) • solve urgent technical problems with specific objectives and actions of short duration. FAO / Trust Funds (GCP) • long-term projects (3-5 years) • solve agricultural, forestry, aquaculture problems, rural development and food security. Telefood Special Fund (TFD • small projects to purchase inputs, tools and materials to support food security initiatives aimed at farmers, rural and / or urban. Special programs • addressing specific issues within the priority areas for FAO. Response to Emergency, Rehabilita tion and Risk Management • preparation projects and emergency assistance, rehabilitation and risk management for natural, climatic and human-induced disasters.

Benefits for Peru  Specialized Technical Assistance through the Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP) or field program  Policy dialogue forum, source of policy advice and capacity building  Knowledge Management and Information to Fight Hunger

GOALS  Was congratulated for achieving both MDG-1 (Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger) as the most demanding target of the World Food Summit (WFS) of halving the number of undernourished between 1990-92 and 2010-2012  Peru obtain the recognition of OIE as a free country of foot and mouth disease. 98% of its territory is certified as free of FMD without vaccination, and 2% is free with vaccination.

Conclusion  Definitely the country is situated in a very delicate situation in the aspect of eradicate hunger under nutrition, pollution and administration in case of natural disasters, however positively to progress in meeting the objectives.

FAO IS PERHAPS NOT THE FINAL SOLUTION, BUT MAY BE THE WAY TO ACHIEVE THEM. ¿?
