Persuasive Writing Part 1: • When asked to write persuasively, you are trying to convince your audience to agree with you or do something you believe in • YOU HAVE TO FULLY UNDERSTAND the issue you are discussing
But, how can I persuade? • Think about it, you are persuasive all the time. How do you convince your parents to get something that you want? • Persuasive writing is not a whole lot different. The stronger your argument, the better your writing will be. (More people will pay attention to what you have to say!)
To write a persuasive essay, you should: 1) Form your opinion about the issue. *Take your time! (The more you learn, the more your opinion may indeed change! )
2) State your thesis in a strong statement in the introduction part of the essay. *This should make clear what your opinion or point of view is 3) Consider your audience, who are you trying to convince? Let this idea guide your writing.
4) Support all claims/opinion statements with evidence, specific details, or reasons *Use details from articles/research you have done *Factual details can be very convincing!
5) Conclude your essay with a sentence that restates your opinion and strongly summarizes your argument.
• Other Tips: • -Ask rhetorical questions (to draw readers in, get them thinking!) • -Address the point of view that is opposite of yours. Predict what people against you may say and address them in your essay. • -Give one reason per paragraph. Don’t try to bombard readers with all your reasons at once!
