Slide4:  In 1714, Ben started grammar school. He only had a couple of years of formal schooling. Slide5:  When he was ten(10) years old, Ben left school to work in his father’s candle-making business. However, this work did not please him. Slide6:  In 1718, Ben started working for his brother, James, as a printer’s apprentice. Slide7:  Also, in 1718, Ben created swim fins to help people move better in water. Slide8:  In 1723, Ben Franklin ran away from his family in Boston to live in Philadelphia. Soon after, he met Deborah Read, a local baker’s daughter. Slide9:  In 1724, Ben moved to London, England, where he continued his training to become a printer. Slide10:  In 1726, Ben returned to the Pennsylvania Colony in America. Slide11:  In 1728, Ben Franklin opened his own printing office and bought the Pennsylvania Gazette one year later. Slide12:  In 1730, Ben asked Deborah Read to become his wife. They had a happy union; however, only two of their three children lived to adulthood. Slide13:  In 1731, Ben Franklin started the colonies’ first public lending library from books in his personal collection. Slide14:  In 1732, Ben published Poor Richard’s Almanac, using the pen name of Richard Saunders. Each volume shared words of common wisdom with its readers. Slide15:  In 1736, Ben Franklin founded the Union Fire Company in Philadelphia. The fire company helped save many wooden buildings that filled the city. Slide16:  In 1736, Ben became clerk of the Pennsylvania General Assembly, where the colony created laws. They met in the newly constructed Independence Hall. Slide17:  In 1737, Ben Franklin was appointed Post Master of Philadelphia. He was responsible for all of the mail delivered to and from his colony. Slide18:  In 1741, Ben invented the Pennsylvania fireplace, which later became known as the Franklin stove. It made using firewood, to warm wooden houses, much safer. Slide19:  In 1746, Ben Franklin printed the treaty between the American Colonies and the Six Indian Nations. Slide20:  In 1747, Ben helped to organize the Pennsylvania militia to protect the colonists’ families and property. 1700 1710 1720 1730 1740 1750 Slide21:  Between 1718 and 1748, Benjamin Franklin worked hard to become a printer. He became well-known in both America and Great Britain. Slide22:  In 1748, Benjamin Franklin retired from the printing business. He wanted to spend more time with his scientific investigations. Slide23:  In 1750, Benjamin Franklin was elected to the Pennsylvania General Assembly. Around this time, rumors of war had spread throughout the 13 American Colonies. Slide24:  Even though Benjamin Franklin was officially a retired printer, he would continue to play an active part, in his colonial community, for the remainder of his life. 1700 1706 1710 1720 1730 1740 1750 1760 1770 1780 1790 Slide25:  Social Studies-First Grade-History- Standard 1 (SS1H1) ___________________________________________________ First Graders will read about and describe the life of historical figures in American history. ___________________________________________________ Title: The Benjamin Franklin Timeline By C Bohannon-Brown Published by Peach e~Books Georgia www.peachebooks.com © Peach e~Books April 23, 2008 Slide27:  Online Resources Thank you to the following on-line resources for information about the life of Benjamin Franklin: Benjamin Franklin Biographical Information http://benjamin-franklin.chaninternet.com/ben-franklin-timeline.htm http://www.pbs.org/benfranklin/index.html http://www.english.udel.edu/lemay/franklin/ http://www.ushistory.org/Franklin/info/index.htm http://www.ideafinder.com/history/inventors/franklin.htm http://www.let.rug.nl/usa/B/bfranklin/franklin.htm http://www.postalmuseum.si.edu/outofthemails/franklin.html http://www.crystalinks.com/franklin.html http://www.archives.upenn.edu/histy/features/1700s/people/franklin_ben.html http://bensguide.gpo.gov/benfranklin/timeline.html http://www.mahalo.com/Benjamin_Franklin http://americanhistory.about.com/od/colonialamerica/p/bio_franklin.htm Slide28:  Online Resources Thank you to the following on-line resources for use of pictures and information: Middle-aged Ben (black and white) http://ded.halo5.net/franklin.jpg Ben, a child, and a kite (lightning experiment) http://www.thebakken.org/electricity/franklin-kite.html B.
