National holidays are times when our nation celebrates special people and events. Slide4:  On national holidays, schools are closed and students spend time with their families. Slide5:  On national holidays, many businesses are closed and workers spend time with their families, too. Slide6:  There are only ten (10) national holidays in America, every year. Can you name them? Slide7:  On January 1, our nation celebrates New Year’s Day because it is the very first day of the year. New Year’s Day Slide8:  Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15, 1929. He believed that all people were created equal. Our nation celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, every third Monday in January. Martin Luther KING Jr. Day Slide9:  President George Washington was born on February 18, 1732. He was the first U.S. President. On the third Monday in February, our nation celebrates Washington’s birthday. Washington’s Birthday Slide10:  Many states celebrate Presidents’ Day on the third Monday in February. Usually both Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln are honored. Presidents’ DAY Slide11:  On the last Monday in May, our nation celebrates Memorial Day. On that day, we remember all American soldiers who have died while serving our country. Memorial Day Slide12:  The United States of America gained its freedom from Great Britain, on July 4, 1776. We celebrate Independence Day every 4th of July. Independence Day Slide13:  In September, our nation celebrates its hard working men and women. On the first Monday, we celebrate Labor Day across America . Labor Day Slide14:  Christopher Columbus was thought to have discovered America, in 1492. So, on the second Monday in October, Americans celebrate Columbus Day. Columbus Day Slide15:  Special men and women who have served in the U.S. military are called veterans. They are honored on November 11, which is Veterans Day in America. Veterans’ Day Slide16:  In 1861, Abraham Lincoln declared a national day of thanksgiving and praise. Many Americans celebrate Thanksgiving Day with family meals on the last Thursday in November. Thanksgiving Day Slide17:  Christmas Day began as a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Today, people also share gifts with friends and family, during this season of giving. Christmas Day Slide18:  National holidays are times when our nation celebrates special people and events.
