Slide 1: Particle Theory of Matter (Kinetic Particle Theory) All matter is made of tiny particles The particles are always moving (they have kinetic energy) The higher the temperature, the faster the particles move The differences between solids, liquids & gases can be explained with this theory Slide 2: States of Matter There are 3 states of matter: Solid Liquid & Gas Slide 3: Solids Have a fixed volume Can’t be compressed into a smaller volume Keeps it shape even when moved Very dense Liquids Have a fixed volume Can’t be compressed into a smaller volume Takes the shape of its container Flows easily Dense Gases Does not have a fixed volume Can be compressed into a smaller volume Will fill all available space Flows easily Not dense Slide 4: Solid Liquid Gas Slide 5: Solids Particles are vibrating Particles can not move around each other Particles held together by strong forces of attraction Particles are close together Liquids Particles are free to move past each other Particles held together by forces of attraction Particles still close together Gases Particles are moving very fast Particles are far apart Almost no forces of attraction between particles Slide 6: Heating causes Expansion Heating matter gives the particles greater kinetic energy. The particles vibrate and move faster. They move slightly further apart. The substance will EXPAND. The density of the substance will decrease. (density is a measure of how many particles in a fixed area – if they move apart, density goes down.) Gas particles have the smallest attractive forces, gases expand the most when heated. You can see liquids expand if they are in a narrow tube. This is how thermometers work. Solids expand only a little. It is hard to see unless you have an accurate measurement. Ball won’t fit through hole in ring unless ring is heated. Hot air balloons go up because the hot air is less dense than the surrounding air
