Lord of the Flies Symbolism Project By: Pamela Vergara

What is Symbolism? Symbol-a person, place, a thing, or an event used to represent something else Lord of the Flies has many symbols that can be used to represent a lot of things. I chose the pig because I believe it represents the savageness that took place in this book. For example, the children who were on the island was so civilized then turned savage and beastly as they were on the verge of death. Also the pig was a source of food for them.

Lord of the Flies has many symbols that can be used to represent a lot of things. I chose the pig because I believe it represents the savageness that took place in this book. For example, the children who were on the island was so civilized then turned savage and beastly as they were on the verge of death. Also the pig was a source of food for them.

The Chant Pg 152 “ Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!” Have you ever heard a child say these gruesome words before? NO, this chant is something they say when they are about to kill, like a pig. Spill his blood? That seems savage like to me even if they are saying this to an animal.

The Beast’s Death Pg153-154 “ The beast was on its knees in the center, its armed folded over its face. The crowd leapt on the beast, screamed, struck, bit, and tore. The beast then fell and landed in to the sea. Simon’s dead body moved out toward the sea.” The children on the island killed poor Simon because they thought he was the beast. Doesn’t that sound savage like too kill another human because they were blinded by there own rage and belief that the beast existed. Then again they wouldn’t have if they knew it was him.

Piggy’s Death Pg 181 “ The rock struck Piggy a blow from chin to knee. Piggy fell forty feet and landed on his back across the square red rock in the sea. The body of Piggy was then gone.” In this scene Ralph and Piggy was trying to get the conch back from the tribe. They then got into a fight of throwing rocks and Piggy got hurt and died.

Pig symbolizes Savageness Pigs are animals and survive in the wild but can humans survive in the wild. Well, the children on the island couldn’t really contain there civilized selves and ended up starving, getting into fights, and two died. If they stayed any longer they wouldn’t survive. A few of the children decided to form there own tribe and painted there faces. Even though the pigs don’t come up really much in the story they play an important part in symbolism. Pigs represent the savage side that the children become.
