DISTANCE EDUCATION IN COMMUNITY COLLEGES AND COLLEGE OF THE CANYONS John Makevich Director, Distance and Accelerated Learning @jmakevich

Distance Education at Colleges and Universities in U.S.  From Babson survey entitled “Grade Change,” 2013  Online enrollments have surpassed 7.1 million and now account for 33% of total higher education enrollments (21.3 million).  Last year, over 400,000 additional students nationwide took at least one online course as compared to the previous year.  66 percent of Chief Academic Officers agree that online education is critical to the long-term strategy of their institution.

Distance Education at Community (2-year) Colleges in U.S.  Most are public institutions  Most are still physical space institutions; online education is just a component  Online education provides access!  Community colleges are open-access institutions  Many students in service area are unable to get to campus (schedule, transportation, money)  Online courses may be the ONLY way for students to complete their first two years of college  Then, they can transfer to other fully-online programs to earn a baccalaureate degree

Distance Education at Community Colleges in California  112 California Community Colleges  All offer some form of online instruction (fully online courses, hybrid courses, Internet-enhanced courses)  Online courses are responsible for approximately 10 percent of FTES (full-time equivalent students) statewide (CCCCO Datamart)

Distance Education at College of the Canyons  Online courses make up roughly 13 to 15 percent of our instruction at the College  Faculty certification  Introduction to Online Teaching and Learning course (2 units)  6 hours of Learning Management System training  1 hour of web accessibility training  Continued training through additional workshops on both technology and pedagogy/androgogy

DE Tools and Resources at College of the Canyons  Learning Management System (Blackboard)  Digital OER Repository (Equella)  State-provided resources  Blackboard Collaborate  Web conferencing  Media repository

Some Distance Education Implementations  Use of open textbooks (water technology, Earth science, algebra for statistics, sociology)  Increases access for online students  Lowers cost  Hybrid learning environments  One class face-to-face, one online  Students can attend in either environment; online is web-conferenced. Recordings are available and captioned.

Defining Distance Education  Distance Education at College of the Canyons  Courses that deliver instruction online using the Internet (synchronously and/or asynchronously), provide for regular and substantive contact and interaction online between instructor and students that is initiated by the instructor, and require online activities as part of a student’s grade.  This is key to ensure active communication between students and instructor, as well as for our accreditation.  Distance education is NOT correspondence education.
