Our Lady of Guadalupe : Our Lady of Guadalupe Compiled by Ana Regina Andrade The Apparition & The Miracle : The Apparition & The Miracle Main Source: “Nican Mopohua” written in Nahuatl, the Aztec language, by the Indian scholar Antonio Valeriano around the middle of the sixteenth century. Historical Context : Historical Context Mesoamerica, the New World, 1521: The capital city of the Aztec empire falls under the Spanish forces. Less than 20 years later, 9 million of the inhabitants of the land, who professed for centuries a polytheistic and human sacrificing religion, are converted to Christianity. What happened in those times that produced such an incredible and historically unprecedented conversion? Apparition in The New World : Apparition in The New World In the December of 1531, the Virgin Mary appeared five times in Mexico. - Two appearances in Dec 9th - One in Dec 10th - Two appearances in Dec 12th This time, the Blessed Virgin choose a humble Indian, of about 55 years of age, who had recently lost his beloved wife. Four appearances were to Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin. The fifth was to Juan Bernadino (Juan Diego’s uncle). At that time, Dec 9th was the same day when --in the East and West– was celebrated the “Holy Conception of Mary.” In the West the feast of the Immaculate Conception was transferred to Dec 8th, while the eastern Church continues to celebrate it on Dec 9th. Traditional Account of The Apparition : Traditional Account of The Apparition During a walk from his village to the city on December 1531, Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin saw a vision of the Virgin Mary at the Hill of Tepeyac. Speaking in Nahuatl (Aztec language), she told him to build an a church on the site, but when Juan Diego spoke to the Spanish Bishop, Fray Juan de Zumarraga, the prelate did not believe him, asking for a miraculous sign. The Virgin told Juan Diego to gather flowers from the hill, even though it was winter, when normally nothing bloomed. He found Spanish roses and presented these to the bishop. When the roses fell from his apron, an icon of the Virgin Mary remained imprinted on the cloth. Slide 6: Let’s read the conversation between the Virgin Mary and Juan Diego…… The Aztec language uses the abundance and profusion of expressions to elaborate one single thought. Icon Description : The Image of our Lady of Guadalupe, represents Mary standing on a crescent, her long flowing garments held up by the arms of an angel; her eyes are looking down with an expression of compassion and humility, apparently at someone on a lower level. She is standing in a glowing halo as though before the sun. There are 46 stars on her mantle and a moon at her feet. These elements need no longer be feared nor worshipped as gods. Icon Description Miracle : Miracle The tilma was made of rail cactus fiber, meant to last for about 20 yrs. Even today, the tilma bears the same clear Image as it did in 1531. The coarce weave of the tilma contains no sizing which would be absolutely necessary to paint such a delicate Image of Mary. Tilma measures: 66 x 41 inches. The Image of Mary is 56 inches high. At close range, the colors of the tilma (especially under magnifiying glass) seem faded, but are vigorous and fresh when viewed at a distance. Miracle : With folded hands the Virgin Mary acknowledges One greater than herself. More than 4 ½ centuries later, the tilma is in great condition. For the first 116 years the tilma was exposed to the elements and to eager handling and kissing of the people. Where is the holy Image now? Miracle New Basilica of Guadalupe built in 1976 : New Basilica of Guadalupe built in 1976 The Holy Image is mounted on the plain, paneled wooden wall behind the main altar of the New Basilica. Am I not here who am your Mother? About 15K a day come to the Basilica en Mexico City. Marian Year : Marian Year Pope John XXIII declared a Marian Year dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe from Oct12 1960- Oct12 1961. At the conclusion of that year, he named Our Lady “Mother of the Americas.” Why the Mother of the Americas? : Why the Mother of the Americas? At the time of the apparitions, there were no national boundaries, no as we now it today. The Virgin Mary appeared 40 years after Columbus arrived to the New World (1492). She stood at the center of the New World, and that is why she is called the Mother of the Americas. A Message of LOVE &COMPASSION : A Message of LOVE &COMPASSION The first act of the Guadalupan revelation consists of 3 parts: Mary asks (sanctuary), Mary promises, Mary affirms. What does she promise? to whom? The Promise of The Virgin Mary : The Promise of The Virgin Mary She will show She will make apparent She will give. Give what? Her love to the people (to all people) Her compassion Her help (aid) Her protection (defend) She is promising to be a MOTHER and show herself as a mother. She AFFIRMS with precision: “I am your merciful Mother.” All essential Maternal activities Miracle : Miracle “The narrative in the language of the Indians done in such harmony of style and expression and yet so deep in theological meaning, would have to be created by a genius.” (Fr. Chirstopher Rengers) …..it would be impossible for someone, Indian or Spanish of the 16th century to create it with such precision of terms and themes. Mary spoke those words and revealed herself to us in that way. Why Catholics Honor the Virgin Mary? : Why Catholics Honor the Virgin Mary? Our reverence for the virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus, leads us to know and love Jesus more. We honor the Virgin of Guadalupe because: She is the manifestation of the virgin Mary in our land --the Americas. She is a powerful symbol of Mexican nationalism. Theologians see the Guadalupan event as signifying a special relationship between the indigenous peoples of the Americas and the Catholic Church. For some Guadalupe is interpreted as a syncretic manifestation of the indigenous goddess Tonantzin (lunar mothergoddess) Why the name of Guadalupe? : Why the name of Guadalupe? According to the story, the Virgin Mary identified herself as Guadalupe when she appeared to Juan Diego’s uncle (Juan Bernardino). Some say that Guadalupe is the corrupted name of a Nahuatl name “Coatlaxopeuh”, which means “who crushes the serpent.” The serpent is Quetzalcoatl, one of the chief Aztec gods, whom the Virgin Mary “crushed” by inspiring the conversion of indigenous people to Catholicism. How is celebrated in Mexico? : How is celebrated in Mexico? In Mexico 90% are Catholics but 100% are Guadalupanos –that means, devoted to the Virgin of Guadalupe, Queen of Mexico. Marvels and More Marvels : Marvels and More Marvels In 1178 nitric acid was spilled on the Image (while its new frame was being polished). To everyone’s astonishment, there was not damage, only a slight stains appeared (upper right corner). In 1921, there was a large explosion of a bomb hidden in a bouquet of flowers on the high altar under the Image, the bomb went off and it bent a large bronze crucifix like a bow, but Our Lady’s glass was not even cracked. Materials used : Materials used Biophysicist and chemists analyzing the red and yellow fiber from the tilma, agreed that the colorings were neither animal, vegetable, nor mineral.
