 Orthopedic surgery is a branch of medicine concerned with diseases and disorders of the human musculoskeletal system, an extremely complicated system that includes the body’s bones, muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments, and nerves. Despite their title, orthopedic surgeons seek surgical and non-surgical solutions to their patients’ orthopedic conditions.

 One of the overarching aspirations of orthopedics has been to replace joints and limbs lost to injury or disease. The scientific design of artificial limbs, or prostheses, has become very sophisticated, and those who wear prosthetic devices not only participate in life’s normal activities, but also in sporting events. Another significant technological advancement made by modern orthopedics is the development of artificial joints, with hip and knee replacements ranking among the most popular, especially among active people.
