MARION COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS & THE SOLID WASTE DEPARTMENT:  MARION COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS & THE SOLID WASTE DEPARTMENT Welcomes you to our virtual tour of the Baseline Landfill Solid Waste Facility Please click to begin. Slide2:  . Baseline Landfill Scale House The new Baseline Landfill Transfer Station, which began its construction in 2002 and was open in the winter of 2004. The building is designed to collect household waste and load the material into semi-trailers, which will then be hauled out of state to a landfill in Georgia. The Transfer Station, in whole, is almost an acre in size and is permitted by Florida Department of Environmental Protection to process up to 1,500 tons per day through the it. Baseline Landfill Transfer Station When you visit the Baseline Solid Waste Facility (Landfill) you will enter though the scale house. Vehicles bringing in solid waste must first be weighed on our scale. The scale house attendants will then direct you to the appropriate area of the landfill for proper disposal. The Marion County Solid Waste Department is made up of five different divisions. Disposal, Household Hazardous Waste, Litter Control, Recycling, and Collection. Landfill tours are available, call Baseline Landfill (352) 671-8465. Hours of Operations are Monday – Saturday 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Closed on Sunday’s. Baseline Landfill C-Cell Prior to 1962 the Baseline Landfill was a private dump for garbage. In 1962 the Arthropod Control Department operated Martel and several other satellite dump sites. In Marion County at one time there were 35 satellite landfills being operated. In 1979 the Baseline Landfill was open and then in 1983 all satellite areas were shut down. In 1982, Marion County let Urban Waste Disposal take over operations of the Baseline Landfill. Marion County terminated the contract with Urban Waste Disposal in 1987 and then the County took over operations. 1988 a consent order required lined cells to be constructed. A ground water monitoring program was also implemented. In 1988 a lined A Cell was constructed to replace the unlined landfill area. In 1991 B Cell was constructed. In 1996 C Cell was constructed with partial closures to Cells A & B. Garbage to this day is being disposed in C Cell. In the fiscal year 05-06 the Disposal Division received approximately 194,000 tons across the scale coming into the landfill or Transfer Station. RECYCLING IT’S NOT A JOB IT’S OUR DUTY!! Slide3:  The anaerobic break down of the garbage in the landfill produces methane gas. The methane gas is odorless and colorless and can be explosive. Therefore, the gas is extracted through wells and pipes and is pumped to the flare station where it is burned off. Baseline Landfill Methane Gas System Leachate (water that comes in contact with garbage) Collection is another integral part of the Baseline Landfill. Pipes are placed at the lower levels of the landfill to collect the leachate and from there it is pumped to the holding tanks (right). From the holding tanks, the leachate is pumped to the Marion County Utilities Department Water Treatment Plant. In fiscal year 05-06, there was approximately 890,000 gallons of leachate pumped to the County Owned and operated Waste Water Treatment Plant. Household Hazardous Waste Division Leachate System Hazardous materials are defined as having one or more of the following four properties: Flammability, Corrosively, Reactivity, and Toxicity. The Household Hazardous Waste Division has many different programs available to the residents of Marion County. An example is The Sharps Program. This program is offered to all Marion County residents FREE of charge and to the City Of Ocala residents. The program consist of proper disposal of hypodermic needles. For more information about our Household Hazardous Waste Division call (352) 671-8480. In fiscal year 05-06, the Household Hazardous Waste Division collected a total of 665 tons of household hazardous waste.
