What is a Badge? Visual representation of achievement, experience, affiliation and/or interest - ideally distinctive and understood within a community. Some examples:
What are 'Open Badges'? Electronic (online) badges Link to criteria and evidence for award Have the credibility of the awarding body Share 'badge clusters' from multiple sources with others on Facebook, LinkedIn, etc. Provide security and verification can check whether a person was actually awarded a specific badge
What's the use in HE? Surface the learning 'hidden' in a transcript Encourage students to undertake co- and extra-curricular activities Recognise informal learning Motivate students to complete formative work Enables students to differentiate themselves from classmates
How could YOU use them?
Think about Badges in your context Are there skills that students use and develop? Do you have extra-curricular activities to encourage? Do you want to draw links between learning and skills demanded by employers/professional bodies? Are there formative activities that you want students to complete?
