Ohio Mathematics and Science Coalition:  Ohio Mathematics and Science Coalition 2006 Accomplishments STEM Advocacy Efforts:  STEM Advocacy Efforts Worked with representatives from the Ohio Department of Education to keep coalition members informed of proposed changes to the public education system. Helped shape recommendations regarding Ohio’s K-12 mathematics and science standards and ODE’s program models. STEM Advocacy Efforts:  STEM Advocacy Efforts Worked with representatives from Science Education Council of Ohio and Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics to develop and publish guidelines for selecting research-based K-12 mathematics and science curriculum materials. STEM Advocacy Efforts:  STEM Advocacy Efforts Participated as part of the Ohio team at the National Academy of Sciences’ 'Rising Above the Gathering Storm' Conference. Participated in the National Alliance of State Science and Mathematics Coalitions’ (NASSMC) Annual Directors Conference STEM Advocacy Efforts:  STEM Advocacy Efforts Participated in the Triangle Coalition for Science and Technology Education Annual Legislative Update Conference Conducted two statewide Coalition meetings to address Ohio’s mathematics and science education system and competitiveness in STEM-related areas. STEM Advocacy Efforts:  STEM Advocacy Efforts Became the first state coalition to endorse the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges’ mathematics standards document, Beyond Crossroads. Proposed and secured the NASSMC endorsement of Beyond Crossroads. STEM Advocacy Efforts:  STEM Advocacy Efforts Continued state-level strategic planning with the Ohio Department of Education, the Ohio Board of Regents, and the Ohio Resource Center Initiated a Public Information Campaign: 'Why Study Mathematics and Science?' - Partnered with INFOhio to distribute more than 300,000 bookmarks to 7th- 9th grade students and their teachers throughout Ohio. STEM Advocacy Efforts:  STEM Advocacy Efforts OMSC representatives served on: - Ohio Resource Center Policy Board - NASA CORE Education Advisory Committee - Governor’s Science and Mathematics Education Policy Advisory Council (SAMEPAC) STEM Advocacy Efforts:  STEM Advocacy Efforts Fostered ongoing communication within an advocacy network that includes: - Business and Industry - K-12 Education - Higher Education - STEM Improvement Groups - Individuals concerned with the improvement of Ohio’s STEM education system. STEM Advocacy Efforts:  STEM Advocacy Efforts Provided instructional leadership training to principals and staff at Ohio’s NASA Explorer Schools. Partnered with NASA to provide Ohio Graduation Test and STEM career preparation materials to selected students and families from Lorain and Cleveland schools. STEM Advocacy Efforts:  STEM Advocacy Efforts Increased the OMSC collection of important studies, news items and research data that can be used to advise the Governor’s office and the Ohio Legislature on issues related to improving Ohio’s STEM education system to support Ohio’s economy and national/global competitiveness. STEM Advocacy Efforts:  STEM Advocacy Efforts Increased the selection of informational and educational materials available through the OMSC Web site. (http://www.OhioMSC.org) - NAEP Assessment Results - Mathematics and Science Research Reports - Standards-Based Curriculum Evaluation Tools - Web Resources for the Mathematics and Science Education Community: a Students a Parents a Teachers a Organizations STEM Advocacy Efforts:  STEM Advocacy Efforts Improved the content management and editing capabilities of the OMSC Web site to be more responsive to the needs and requests of coalition members. Created a contact database of all members to facilitate communication throughout the OMSC advocacy network. Membership:  Membership Includes broad representation from Ohio’s professional communities: - Aerospace - Chemical - Engineering - Medical - Mathematics and Computer Science - Informal Science Education Centers - K-16 Educators - State Agencies - Business Community Membership:  Membership Ohio Mathematics and Science Coalition current active membership: 57 Current OMSC Emeritus membership: 5
