PRINCIPAL NOTES……….. TOGETHER LET’S FOCUS ON MANNERS, HELP us keep this from becoming “lost” in our day to day interactions with one another and those we meet! SCIENCE/ART FAIR REMEMBER TWO DAYS REMAIN ….Science/Art Fair schedule for Thursday, March 13 from 6:00 – 7:30 in St. Francis Hall (formerly McKeon Center). We look forward to viewing everyone’s project, invention and creative work. PLEASE remember that students are required to wear their mass uniform and be prepared to present their projects to those visiting our OMMS event. REMEMBER too that we are requesting that students take their Science Projects home at the end of the evening. On behalf of everyone we thank you in advance for attending in support of our students and each child’s efforts in our annual OMMS SCIENCE/ART FAIR. Something new this year….. We would like to request that all students leave their ART creations instead of removing them at the end of the evening. This appeal is largely due to a wonderful opportunity brought to our attention by a school family and our goal of being able to display OMMS student ART WORK in a new office building, but the time frame has yet to be determined. This is quite an honor and any piece of ART selected to be displayed comes with the understanding it will not be returned to the school or “artist” so students/families must be comfortable in donating their piece of work. If this is a problem please let Mr. Sharp or the office know that your family does not wish to participate. Thank you for your consideration and permission to “show” the talent of our OMMS artists! MARIA MONTESSORI SHADOW DAY ……..……Friday, March 21 What does that mean? Do you feel as if you have been invited, but really do not understand why? Hopefully you did remember to save the date as this is a perfect opportunity to join your child at school to “shadow” them at work. Your children are looking forward to captivating you with their “work” on Friday, March 21, and hopefully spending the remainder of the afternoon with you away from “work” enjoying the first weekend of SPRING a little early…..remember you deserve to have that relief every now and then! Our hope is that at least one person in each family will be able OLD MISSION MONTESSORI SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Tuesday, March 11, 2014 artin’s ne. T n was In the res FORTY HOLY MARTYRS (Died 320) During the season of Lent, Eastern Christians celebrate the feast of the Forty Holy Martyrs. These saints were Christian soldiers of various races from the city of Sebaste in Armenia. They refused to obey the demand of the emperor Licinius that they abandon their religion, so they were sentenced to death by freezing. Forced to lie on a frozen pond, they encouraged each other during their ordeal. One soldier lost heart and ran for a warm bath that the emperor had prepared to tempt them. A pagan soldier, inspired by the courage of the other 39, joined the martyrs. So their number remained complete. This feast tells us something about Lent itself. During the 40 days of this season, we try to die to whatever is not life-giving in us. On this March day it is a custom to search for the returning birds and to listen for their songs. The deadly power of cold winter will not last forever. The Easter victory of Christ is coming soon. Forty Holy Martyrs, pray for us. to join their child (ren) for this special occasion. We know your child anticipates being your teacher for the morning and the teachers look forward to your presence on Friday. Remember this is a wonderful opportunity for your child, a time to actually show YOU their “work” and have your undivided attention! After everyone’s time within the classroom we will gather to celebrate mass in the Serra Center at 11:00, followed by an opportunity for you and your child to visit other classrooms within OMMS. Many have found this to be truly beneficial especially for those who are not aware of the next level and what the program offers; therefore why not take advantage of this opportunity, consider this time as your own private OPEN HOUSE! We look forward to seeing everyone on Friday, March 21. PLAY LIKE A CHAMPION TODAY ..…Sports as Ministry This workshop is offered to all parents. Several of OMMS parents and coaches have attended this workshop in the past and found it to be well worth their time. For your convenience we have included a flyer to provide additional information. REMEMBER The PTG General Meeting has been scheduled for Monday, March 24th at 6:30 p.m. in St. Francis Hall (formerly named McKeon Center). LET’S KEEP HEALTHY….. PLEASE CONTINUE to remind and encourage everyone to keep healthy! “Hand Washing is one of the single most important means of preventing the spread of infection,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). We continue to remind all students to wash their hands with soap and water for 20 seconds, after using the toilet, after sneezing, coughing, and wiping/blowing their noses; an alcohol based sanitizer is provided for their use. We also continue to remind students to COVER their COUGH and SNEEZES with tissues or cough/sneeze into the crook of their elbow/sleeve. Please assist us by reminding your own child (ren) to continue this practice at home. Please remember to set a good example by doing this yourself to help children develop the habit. DON’T FORGET ……. Deadline for 2014 Yearbook is approaching. At this point we still have yearbooks; remember to purchase early to ensure your child receives a copy to preserve memories of the 2013-14 school year! We are looking for two to three parents to join our creative group to fulfill their Christmas in July hours. The Artisan committee meets regularly to

“jury” artisan applications before CinJ. Duties may include determining grounds/artisan booth layout, setup/tear-down timing, artisan conduct, payments, etc. Each member will work the CinJ weekend in some capacity. Once the committee is fully staffed, specific duties and shifts will be discussed and determined to ensure there is constant coverage and supervision leading up to, and during, the weekend of CinJ. Please contact me directly if you would like to participate on the Artisan committee, or if you have any questions. Our first committee meeting is coming up next week, so don’t hesitate! Renee Michaelson (619) 867-9680…another great way to support our school! is offering gift cards for 3 oil changes worth $120 for only $40. The best part is OMMS gets to keep $20 (that's half!) of each sale. If we sell 200 gift cards we would earn $4000. If we sell 500 gift cards we would earn $10,000! The money to be earned is endless because everybody NEEDS oil changes. Please see Ms. Cyndi in the office to buy yours; grab a few more to sell at work to your coworkers.
