OLYMPIC GAMES:  OLYMPIC GAMES Ancient Times Brief History of the Olympics:  Brief History of the Olympics Long ago ancient Greeks often waged wars. Small states suffered and lost much even if they didn’t take any side and stayed out of the wars. The ruler of such a small state, Elis, wanted to live in peace with all neighbours. He was a diplomat because his negotiations were successful and Elis was recognized a neutral state. To celebrate this achievement, he organized athletic games. Later they were called the Olympic Games. Slide3:  According to historic records, the first Olympic Games were held in 776 B.C.in Olympia, Greece. The Games were held every four years in honour of the king of the gods, Zeus. Special messengers were sent out in every direction to announce the beginning of the Games. Slide4:  In the very earliest Olympiad there was only one event – the 200 yard sprint. Soon other events were added: boxing, wrestling, the pankrathion, the discus throw, the javelin throw, the long jump. By the 25th Olympiad the four-horse chariot race was added. Slide5:  In 394 A.D., the Byzantine Emperor Theodosius I banned the Games for religious reasons. Thirty-three years later, Emperor Theodosius ordered the total destructions of the Olympia’s temples. In 1875 archaeologists rediscovered the city. Slide6:  In 1894 a young French teacher Pierre de Coubertin wrote a letter to the athletic organizations of every country. In his letter he described the educational value of sports to modern man based on Greek ideas. Two years later the first modern Olympic Games took place in Athens, Greece.
