TURIN 2006:  TURIN 2006 Turin Media Information Session October 17, 2005 Toronto Overview:  Overview Canada at the Games Goals for Turin 2006 New initiatives COC Media services COC spokespeople Canada Olympic House Canada at the Games :  Canada at the Games Estimated team size: 200 Athletes – entered in all sports Approx. 200 additional accredited team members - coaches, trainers, technical staff, team leaders, health care staff, etc. Olympic Sport Events:  Olympic Sport Events Alpine skiing Biathlon Bobsleigh Cross-country skiing Curling Figure skating Freestyle skiing Ice Hockey Luge Long track speed skating Nordic combined (ski jump and cross-country ski) Short track speed skating Skeleton Ski jumping Snowboarding Canadian Team List:  Canadian Team List Official team list available January 31, 2006 Deadline to qualify for Games: January 20 Changes permitted until January 30, when entry forms must be submitted to TOROC Only deletions permitted after January 30 Qualification Standards:  Qualification Standards To qualify for Turin, Canadian athletes must meet qualification standards set by both the International Sport Federation and National Sport Federation of their respective sport ISF and NSF standards for each sport posted at: www.olympic.ca under “Olympic Games – Turin” Goals for the Games:  Goals for the Games Top three finish for Canada (approx. 25 medals) – 4th in Salt Lake City (17 medals) COC believes this is a realistic goal – in line with Own the Podium-2010 target Canada finished as third country overall in 2004-05 winter season Canada’s athletes improved their ranking in total World Championship medals from fifth in 2001 to third in 2005 New Games Initiatives:  New Games Initiatives Focus on Olympic team preparation Olympic Excellence Series – pre- and post- Games Staff training seminar – included head coaches, sport psychologists and sport nutritionist for first time Taking 10 sport psychologists to Turin Selection of Games staff (i.e. technicians, health care) who work with team year round Closer partnership between COC and NSFs New Games Initiatives :  New Games Initiatives Performance-focused Services Performance Centre – video analysis, isolation beds, meeting rooms, medical services outside of village Athlete Liaison Officers – Marnie McBean, Lloyd Eisler, Kirstin Normand, François Drolet Family Program – run from Canada Olympic House COC Media Services at the Games:  COC Media Services at the Games COC Media Services office at MPC – shared with Vancouver 2010 Opening February 3 Office hours 8 a.m. – 11 p.m. Will communicate with Canadian media via email, in person, phone and “Canada” section of Info 2006 terminal Team handbooks available in early February Access to media tickets for opening/closing ceremony, hockey, etc. COC Media Services at the Games:  COC Media Services at the Games Communications Office in Turin Olympic Village access to village/tours via village media attaché (24 hours’ notice) posted office hours Access to Sestriere and Bardonecchia villages via mountain-based media attachés Media attachés will be in mixed zone at all events in which Canadians are competing – available by cell phone 24/7 Will provide office numbers and cell phone numbers for all attachés when available (late January) COC Media Services at the Games:  COC Media Services at the Games COC Press Conferences Sport-specific, introduction to teams Day before opening ceremony, flag bearer Mid-way through Games End of Games – day of closing ceremony, closing flag bearer Canada Olympic House:  Canada Olympic House Canada Olympic House (COH) located near the medals plaza in Turin; will be the central administrative operation for the COC, with some corporate hospitality focused on the Olympic family, athletes, coaches, families of team members, staff and media.
