A Uniquely American Story : Barack Obama Change A Uniquely American Story Slide 2: Stanley Ann Dunham Obama Soetoro, Barack Obama’s mother Precocious, self-assured Stanley Ann ; her impetuous father, who named his only child after himself; her mother, Madelyn, the quiet, firm influence in the home. Durham, now 85 and living in Honolulu along with her granddaughter and Obama's half-sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, had two obstacles to overcome in Hawaii at the time — being a woman and being part of the state's white minority. Dunham was born Madelyn Payne in Peru, Kan., on Oct. 26, 1922. When she was 3 years old, Payne's family moved to Augusta, Kan., where young Madelyn was raised, Soetoro-Ng said. She married Stanley Armour Dunham in 1940. Madelyn Dunham attended college at the University of Washington before becoming an aircraft inspector for Boeing during World War II.After the war, she attended UC-Berkeley, worked various jobs, then came to the Islands, where she joined the Bank of Hawaii in 1960. When he was 8 years old, Stanley Armour Dunham found his mother's body. It was 1926, and Ruth Armour Dunham had committed suicide at the age of 26. » Click to enlarge image Barack Obama with his maternal grandparents, Stanley and Madelyn Dunham during a 1982 visit to New York, where Obama was attending Columbia. (Courtesy of The Obama Family) Barack Obama has written that that tragic discovery might have contributed to making his grandfather "a bit wild" as a teenager in Wichita, Kansas. After he was kicked out of high school "for punching the principal in the nose," the man Obama would later know as "Gramps" hopped freight trains and dabbled in "moonshine, cards and women," Obama wrote in Dreams From My Father. With his marriage to Obama's grandmother, Dunham settled into a respectable life as a furniture salesman. But he never lost his itch for adventure, moving his family from Kansas to Texas to Washington state and finally to Hawaii. Barack Hussein OBAMA was born on 4 August 1961 at the Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Barack Hussein OBAMA, Sr. of Nyangoma-Kogelo, Siaya District, Kenya, and Ann DUNHAM of Wichita, Kansas. His parents met while both were attending the East-West Center of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where his father was enrolled as a foreign student. When Barack Obama was two years old, his parents divorced and his father moved to Connecticut to continue his education before returning to Kenya. When Obama was six, his mother married Lolo Soetoro, an Indonesian oil manager. In 1967, when Soetoro's student visa was revoked because of political unrest in Indonesia, Dunham and Barack, then in first grade, accompanied him to Jakarta, Indonesia. Obama's half-sister, Maya Soetoro was born after the family moved to Indonesia. Four years later she sent him back to the United States to live with his maternal grandmother. Barack Obama graduated from Columbia University and Harvard Law School, where he met his future wife, Michelle Robinson. They have two daughters, Malia and Sasha. Both Madelyn and Stanley Dunham are descended from European colonists, mostly from England, who settled in the American colonies in the 17th and 18th century. The most recent native European ancestor is Stanley's great grandfather, Falmouth Kearney, an Irish farmer, who immigrated from County Offaly, Ireland during the Great Irish Famine and resettled in Tipton County, Indiana. Falmouth Kearney's youngest daughter, Mary Ann (Kearney) Dunham, is Stanley Dunham's paternal grandmother.[5]. Stanley Dunham is a seventh cousin, once removed, of Vice-President Dick Cheney and a seventh cousin, twice removed, of President Harry S Truman through through their common ancestor, Mareen Duvall, a wealthy French Huguenot merchant who immigrated to Maryland in the 1650s.[6]. Madelyn Dunham, Obama's grandmother, blazed a feminist trail in Hawaii banking circles in the late 1960s and early 1970s and rose to become one of the Bank of Hawaii's first female vice presidents. THE DUNHAMS Old friends say they see flashes of them all in Barack Obama. The Grandparents who raised Obama Now we know where he got his ears! This 24-year-old bookkeeper worked for an oil well supply company in Tulsa, Oklahoma and would be called up to serve in the First World War. (Another great-grandfather and a great-great-grandfather also registered for the draft, although neither served in the Great War.) In January 1942, Illinois Sen. Barak Obama's 24-year-old grandfather, Stanley Dunham, said goodbye to his wife and infant and enlisted in the U.S. Army. "He signed up for duty, joined Patton's army and marched across Europe," said Sen. Obama of his grandfather's service. Obama's great-great-great-grandfather Robert Wolfey served in the Ohio Infantry during the Civil War. This Union soldier kept the rank of private throughout his service.
