 The Bayat Foundation, established through the generosity of Afghan communications pioneer Ehsan Bayat, has made great strides in assisting the people of Afghanistan in rebuilding their war-torn nation. In particular, the nonprofit concentrates on rebuilding and creating maternity hospitals and improving health care for mothers, infants, and children throughout the country.

 A major project of the foundation involves the construction of a series of 12 facilities focused on childbirth and the care of new mothers and their babies. In cooperation with other nongovernmental organizations and private donors, the foundation built a maternity facility capable of serving 50 women in the city of Maimana, and another with 20 beds in the Tora Bora region. Recently, over the course of one year alone, nearly 200,000 babies were born in Bayat Foundation-supported hospitals.

 World Health Organization statistics note that more than 40 percent of the Afghan population lives below established poverty lines. Overall health care infrastructure remains very weak, and there is an ongoing shortage of midwives and female health care practitioners throughout the country. The maternal mortality rate is estimated at more than 400 per 100,000 births, and more than half of all Afghan children under the age of 5 experience delayed growth. According to the World Bank, the country’s gross domestic product decreases by as much as 3 percent annually due to widespread malnutrition among its people. In this atmosphere, the assistance provided by groups such as the Bayat Foundation will prove increasingly vital as the country works toward health and prosperity.
