Penguins : Penguins Ice Cool Birds By: Nicole Why did I choose this animal? : Why did I choose this animal? I chose this animal because I love penguins. I want to know more about them. I think a penguin are cool. DESCRIPTION : DESCRIPTION Description : Description They stand almost 4 ft. tall and weigh 70 to 90 lbs. They are a flightless bird. They are black and white and look like they have a tuxedo on. Adaptations : Adaptations Penguins have feathers to keep them warm. Penguins are designed for life in the sea. Some species spend as much as 75% of their lives in the water. Their wings, shaped like flippers, help them "fly" underwater at speeds up to 15 mph. There is a thick layer of blubber under the emperor’s skin. Habitat : Habitat General Habitat Information : General Habitat Information Penguins live in cold seas around Antarctica. Most penguins live by the South Pole. Some penguins live along the coast of South America, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand. Penguins lay eggs on ice and gather at rookeries All penguins live in the southern hemisphere. Temperatures : Temperatures Emperors live in the coldest climate on earth. Temperatures can drop as low as -140 degrees Fahrenheit (-60 degrees Celsius). Water : Water The water where some of the penguins live is some time ice. Penguins need water to get the food that they need to eat. With out water penguins could not survive. Plant Life : Plant Life You will not find any plant life where the penguins live except for mosses. The eat krill in the water that feed on plankton, a types of water plant. Animal Life : Animal Life The only animals that live where the penguins live are Leopard seals, sea lions, sharks, and killer whales. They all eat penguins. There are also other penguins and sometimes birds that try to get their eggs during nesting season. Sensory Organs : Sensory Organs Sight : Sight Penguins use their sight to see if there is anyone or anything coming to kill it. Penguins use their sight to help them find food. If a penguin can’t see it would have a hard time surviving. Smell : Smell Penguins use their sensory organ (smell) to tell if the food is bad. Penguins use their smell to tell what is there. A penguins would have trouble surviving if it lost its sense of smell. Hearing : Hearing Penguins use their sense of hearing to tell if there baby is about to come out of it’s egg. Penguin chicks can tell their mother apart from all the other penguins by their hearing. Taste : Taste A penguin uses its taste to tell if the food is bad. It is not known if they have taste buds. Touch : Touch There is a thick layer of blubber under the Emperor's skin. They use their ability to touch to feel and guide their babies. It is the touch of their skin that keeps eggs warm during the mating season. Food and Life cycles : Food and Life cycles Life Cycle : Life Cycle Emperor penguins can mate when they are 4 years old The female lays one large egg. The male penguins then has the egg as the female go back to the sea for feed. When the egg hatches the female returns to care for the chick. They can live to be 20 years old.
