KOREAN LANGUAGE AND CULTURAL CENTER

About the Korean Language and Cultural Center (KLCC) The Korean Language and Cultural Center (KLCC) was created to facilitate an appreciation of the Korean language and culture and to support the development of Korean foreign language programs outside Korea. The KLCC developed out of the Korean program at New Hope Academy, a school in Maryland (suburban Washington, D.C.), designed and taught by Dr. In Ku Kim-Marshall (formerly a teacher there but now head of the Division of Korean Studies at Georgetown University). From New Hope's founding in 1990, all students in grades K-11 have had the opportunity to benefit from this innovative program which introduces the Korean language and culture.

Ms. Eunjung Kim, Korean Instructor for the Korean Language and Cultural Center (KLCC) Ms. Eun Jung Kim teaches Korean language at all levels and for all grades. She's from Seoul, South Korea , where she studied Japanese language and education as an undergraduate, and she holds a master's degree in Bilingual Special Education from the George Washington University. She has travelled all over the world and is fluent in Korean, English, and Japanese.       During her studies, she always asked herself how to help students enjoy studying and how to aid them in overcoming their obstacles in learning a new language. She found that bridging curriculum with real-life experiences boosts students' desire to learn. Various activities such as making their own books, role-playing, cooking, singing, and cultural events motivate students to learn a new language and culture.       "I strongly believe that the teacher's role is not only to deliver particular knowledge, but also to help students to find learning strategies for themselves. Once they are acquainted with various learning methods, they will exercise their own reason and become independent learners."

These are the pictures of 2 nd Graders.  They are wearing the traditional Korean dress, which is called "Hanbok" and learning how to bow and how to greet each other.  안녕하세요 ? (Ahn nyong hasaeyo?) means "hello, how are you?"   Each student did the same activity and usually we will do these activities around the Korean Thanksgiving and the Korean New Year. The students enjoy the folk dress and Korean food.
