Amanda runs a very successful company, TalkativeOnline Services, who provide social media training and manages social media accounts for clients. What Amanda doesn't know about Twitter probably isn't worth knowing and she kindly agreed to answer some twitter related questions for me and my readers! Hello Amanda, can you tell me a bit about your background? Sure, I've been very privileged throughout my working career and have worked across several industries from, working in HR as a Personnel/Logistic Officer within the oil industry, Freelance paralegal consultation for several years in London, working for the local primary care trust for Hastings & Rother on the Station Plaza Health project as well as owning my own retail business for over 11 years. Meeting people has always interested me and my working life has been both challenging and
rewarding and made social media an ideal career for me. I've always been a 'Peoples Person' and genuinely love meeting new people, finding out their interests and if I can help them along the way then to me, that's an added bonus. What attracted you to working in Social Media? Well, having my own business for over 11 years marketing played a key part in some of the products I sold as I specialised in 'Collectable' and limited edition pieces ranging from Winnie the Pooh to unique limited edition French biscuit porcelain dolls designed by John Paul Gautier. Marketing back then was very traditional in the sense of rolling up your sleeves and going out handing out leaflets to encourage people to come into the shop and have a browse. You specialize in Twitter, what made you choose that particular social network? Twitter for me, is my favourite social media tool and it acts as the 'Turbo Booster' to all your social media platforms. I first joined Twitter back in 2010 and knew back then, this was an amazing tool. I have found when I am coaching clients they seem to grasp the basic fundamentals very quickly and can't wait to start building their audiences and engaging. One of the basic fundamentals I can't emphasise enough is always, always create your own bespoke lists [make them private] to organise followers who are of interest to you but most importantly, building and nurturing relationships to the point they either become potential clients or business advocates! The 'Perfect Digital Word of Mouth' Twitter strategy. Which methods do you use to gain followers on Twitter? I use 'Twitter Lists' to fully maximise engagement with certain niched audiences. I browse through these everyday depending on what twitter strategy we are running and I look for opportunities whereby I can instigate or interject in a conversation.
It's my favourite part of using Twitter. Getting to know people and finding out what they're interests are, you never know where it may lead to. It could be with a company that synergises with what you do or maybe someone who becomes a great advocate, who knows? Tweetdeck is one of my favourite tools. It's a great tool for managing your 'Twitter Lists' and at a quick glance you can reply instantly to individuals who have retweeted some of your content as well as interjecting in topical conversations. My favourite part of Tweet Deck is being able to schedule tweets in advance which is a great 'time saving' tool and also enables us to align our content strategy with the various campaigns we are running. But most importantly, it gives us MORE time to be able to engage with targeted audiences. If your business is on Twitter what should you tweet about? Well, it really depends on what your core objective is at the beginning. Is the Twitter business account going to be used for customer service, educating your audience about your product/service you provide, generating a loyal following by providing tips, case-studies, testimonials which are all great for company PR [public relations] which demonstrates your knowledge and expertise in your field. From all of these actions no matter what journey your twitter followers are going is to develop and build relationships enabling you to engage with them to either becoming a loyal customer or someone who refers your business/service to others. Which is your favourite Twitter tool?
Tweet Adder: This is an amazing tool which allows you to find and engage with niche/targeted audiences. It's a great way to grow your twitter following efficiently and quickly. I became an early advocate for this software back in 2010 and always recommend clients sign up when I am coaching them on the use of Twitter, because of the time saving and the ability it gives in finding the right audiences. It also helps focus on targeted audiences and is so simple and easy to use. When is it best to schedule your posts by using third party apps such as Hootsuite? I don't use Hootsuite I use Tweet Deck. As a rule of thumb I normally advise scheduling tweets first thing in the morning around 88.30am, this could consist of a daily quote relevant to your twitter campaign [inspirational quotes also work very well], 11am, a piece of targeted content and 1pm, another piece of content. The timing of tweets is very important and I would suggest after building your twitter following for approximately two weeks, that you sign up to use a software called 'Tweriod'. This is a fantastic tool which plugs into your twitter profile and analyses the activity of your audience and delivers an analysis of your twitter followers, showing when they are most active. Fantastic tool for giving you data and information about the best times to put out Tweets and to look for engagement, which helps maximise the benefits of using Twitter. Any tips for increasing engagement on Twitter?
Always know your core objective and work to a Twitter Strategy or better still an overall online / offline marketing strategy. Know how you're going to measure your actions in achieving your objective, i.e. using URL shorteners to track and monitor links, Retweets, enquires etc. Measuring interactions educates you about the interests of your audience and enables to you put out more content that will generate engagement, whilst keeping your eye on the objective. People are changing all the time in their use of the online channels, so it's important to monitor changes so that you can adjust your content to maintain effective relationship building, but still keep your eye on the what you want them to do. Also, I can't emphasise enough - Using Twitter Lists, is a simple but effective way of increasing engagement. Without lists, it's like engaging 'Blind-folded' - imagine trying to look through 100's of Tweets each day, trying to find the one or two, from the prospects you are working on. What are your current projects? We are working on an 'Energy Drinks' campaign, where we are working very closely with a Councillor based in Edinburgh who shares a passion in looking after today's children. This campaign really excites me, as supporting this aligns closely to my own beliefs of looking after others where you can. Contributing and making a difference to the local (or larger) community, gets my adrenalin going!
We're also working with 2 companies who have products they want to take global - one company has developed a new and cutting edge guitar amplifier and the other a brand of clothing. We've also come up with an innovative approach to magazine publication and production, linked to the online world, which we are now working on with a large print company. There are others, such as helping set up a training academy to help give young people opportunity for the future and talking with some clever people about Aquaponics - fascinating subject. Our off the wall thinking mixed with our strategic approach brings companies and people to our door who need help in maximising the use of the online digital world. And most importantly which is your favourite coffee, latte or cappuccino? :) Well, being a Coffee connoisseur, my favourite coffee is latte with caramel syrup! I have to discipline myself throughout the week as I could quite easily have 2 or 3 a day! Must be my 'Sweet Tooth'. :) Sounds yummy Amanda, thank you for taking time out to answer my questions.
