Lesson 1 The staff Learn music theory: ABRSM Grades 1&2

How do we write music? • This is called a staff • We write music in each line or space

Where does the music go? • Notes go either in a line or a space • What they sound like depends on their position on the staff

There’s not a lot of space… • There isn’t a lot of space indeed! • We only have 7 different notes:

There’s not a lot of space… • There isn’t a lot of space indeed! • We only have 7 different notes: C This note is important because it is in the middle of a piano. It’s called middle C

There’s not a lot of space… • There isn’t a lot of space indeed! • We only have 7 different notes: C, D

There’s not a lot of space… • There isn’t a lot of space indeed! • We only have 7 different notes: C, D, E, F, G, A, and B! • Then it just repeats! C

So what is that symbol? • The symbol at the start is called a clef • This one is the treble clef, or G clef

So what is that symbol? • This one is the treble clef, or G clef • This is because the line at which we start drawing is G

How do we draw it? • Drawing the clef isn’t too difficult! • We start at the second line from the bottom, around the note G

How do we draw it? • Drawing the clef isn’t too difficult! • Then we loop around it

How do we draw it? • Drawing the clef isn’t too difficult! • Go above the top line

How do we draw it? • Drawing the clef isn’t too difficult! • And below the bottom line!
