I’ve been thinking a lot about this event & this talk

The question was: What should I talk about?

Harder than it seems... Mozilla’s too complex

This point in time is too complex

I thought for a while about doing a traditional all hands talk, like this...

4 years ago... ~15 employees, 2 people in MozJP, 2 in MozEU No MoCo, no MoMo, noone in China, NZ... ~15 million users $15 million in the bank working on Firefox & Thunderbird 1.0.6 (& 1.0.7!)

2 Years later (2007 all hands)... around 100 people at MoCo

Today: 250 people at the all hands! with interns on the way

Today: Market

Today: Market on the verge of 100M Active Daily Users (around 300M monthly)

Today: Market on the verge of 100M Active Daily Users (around 300M monthly) passed 22% worldwide market share

So I thought about doing more of a product-oriented talk...

FENNEC Getting usable quickly • Multiple platforms progressing • (maemo, Win, Symbian...) Add-ons already showing up • Having impact on Firefox as well •

Seemed relevant to talk about, but not enough

So I started thinking more about the impact we’re having in the world...

Mozilla’s impact in communities

Impact on organizations Governments, campaigns, schools...

Not to mention these guys...

...but even that didn’t really capture the whole story...

Question I kept thinking about How do organizations last 50 years?

What does that even mean? And what does it mean for us?

Think of some organizations that have been meaningful.

...for the past 5 years?

...the past 10 years?

...the past 20 years?

...the past 50 years?

They all balance the long term mission with short term action.

They all stay in balance Poetry & Pragmatics

Need to balance poetry of mission pragmatics of doing things that matter to real people today

A lot of hard work Tensions between poetry & pragmatics

The most successful orgs balance, and always reinvent themselves, embrace the long term but also change

So what does that mean for Mozilla? We need to continue to write new poetry. While solving our pragmatic challenges.

so let’s talk about those pragmatic challenges...

Our challenges for this year... 1. Organizational growing pains 2. Too much to do 3. Rapid rate of change

Our challenges for this year & next 1. Organizational Growing Pains

250 people is a lot.

seriously. this is a ton of people.

impossible?? It’s hard to know everything that’s happening anymore.

And it’ll be even harder tomorrow.

Don’t Panic! This is totally normal.

We need to find our own path.

Here are a few things we need to really pay attention to Avoid becoming insular Remember to trust each other Over-communicate

Above all, remember that we will make mistakes. So learn & move on.

2. Too much to do

Way too much to do (by ourselves)...

Need to work to find coherence desktop - mobile - services

Successful organizations continuously generate new projects, involve new people

and turn “outsiders” into “insiders”

Projects for creating more insiders...

3. Rapid Rate of Change

We’re in a more dynamic environment than ever

with real competition on both “sides”

and everyone’s noticed & understood & implemented their version of the “mozilla playbook”

So we’re faced with a number of innovator’s dilemmas

We need to continue to invest in the technology & process that’s gotten us here

Disrupting ourselves but also to reinvent radically in some places.

Some thoughts for this week

This week Enjoy & be inspired by the people around you.

This week Think big -- write new poetry. But also work on the pragmatics -- building & shipping things that matter.
