Choosing a Course Management System : Choosing a Course Management System Distance Education Students needed to be engaged in their instruction. A unified method to delivering instruction needed to be put into place. A unified process for receiving course work from students was also needed. The instructional process needed to be consistent, reliable, and able to meet future institution and student needs. What is Moodle?Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment : What is Moodle?Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment A course management system that facilitates instruction through the use of online interaction. Moodle includes multiple tools for engaging students and enhancing learning. An online environment that can be used effectively in distance education and traditional classes. Moodle A Good Fit For ITC : Moodle A Good Fit For ITC User Friendly: Instructors don’t need to know code to design instruction Has the capabilities to be interactive Includes a variety of resources to enhance student learning and engagement. Has capabilities to grow Evolution of Moodle at ITC : Evolution of Moodle at ITC In Spring 2007 I first implemented Moodle as a sub domain of a personal Internet hosting site. Was used by just distance education sites. Fall 2007 purchased a dedicated hosting account for ITC. Installed Moodle on this account. Was used by both distance education and local classes. Fall 2008 ITC contracted with an Application Service Provider, that specializes in hosting Moodle for educational institutions. Moving Moodle From ISPs to an ASP : Moving Moodle From ISPs to an ASP As ITC’s use of Moodle grew, so had the reliability of access to course content have to grow. More Moodle usage meant more needed support. Class content is “mission critical information.” As usage grows, performance becomes an issue. Using Complementary Technologies : Using Complementary Technologies Moodle is an excellent tool, but it can’t do everything Finding other tools to enhance learning is key, but the new technologies have to fit with what is already in place. Tools that can work seamlessly with Moodle can enhance the overall learning experience for students. Developing Support Processes : Developing Support Processes Support of users is just as important as instruction ITC is working to expand its level of support
