Life casting is gaining prominence around the world as a beautiful way to capture a realistic three-dimensional image of a living person and preserve it indefinitely. This art is infinitely fascinating and absorbing as you delve into the vast possibilities and let your creative juices flow. But, while seeing your imagination come alive will definitely be marked by great satisfaction and pleasure, you cannot afford to ignore the safety elements in the process. It goes without saying that since life casting involves mold making directly from the living human body, you can use only best quality and skin safe mold making materials and nothing else. They should always be non toxic and non allergenic, to the extent of being safe for use on newborns too. So, when capturing the human form, body safe alginates and plaster bandages are considered the best and safest mold making materials possible. But alginate is primarily a waste mold that cannot be re-used while plaster bandages fail to capture precision details and are mostly used to create a mother mold or form molds for belly casting. Therefore, some mold making and casting materials manufacturers have developed a line of skin safe silicone rubber products for use in life and body casting. These can be applied

directly on the skin – any body part, be it face, hands, torso and so on. What’s more, the type of mold making can be re-used for multiple castings as well. Yet, it is always advisable to test a small sample on the inside of the wrist of the model to check for redness, rash or other allergic reactions. Discontinue use immediately in case of any negative reaction. Apart from this, the environment in which the casting or life casting is being done should always be well ventilated with sufficient lighting from non glare sources – exhaust fans or other direct forced air flow measures should also be used if needed. Health and safety of the artist is equally important. Especially when it comes to regular castings, some materials like polyurethane and polyester resins or even silicone rubber can produce excessive heat or even harmful fumes. Direct skin contact with some products can also prove dangerous. Wearing protective clothing like gloves, aprons, full sleeved garments, full pants and therefore extremely important. Other safety equipment like earmuffs, safety glasses or protective shields should also be used as and when required. Apart from this, all manufacturer instructions and safety precautions should be carefully adhered to at all times. And what about the safety of the environment? Many mold making and casting products can damage the environment when discarded. Therefore, it is important to select environmentally safe products – some mold making and casting materials are available that actually nourish the soil when disposed! So, mold and cast all you want, but always use safe and healthy art supplies only!
