Module 7- Section 4: Module 7- Section 4 In this section of Module 7 we will cover sharing over the network and share permissions. We will finish this section with ownership of a file or folder. 1 Sharing on a Network: Sharing on a Network Recall that NTFS permissions are a rigorous set of permissions that determine the level of control users have over a folder and its contents. NTFS permissions apply to accounts that are accessed on the local PC and accounts that access the PC (where the folders are stored) over the network. 2 PowerPoint Presentation: Even though accessing another user’s files and folders on a local PC is a form of sharing the term Sharing in Windows refers specifically to accessing a resource over a network. 3 PowerPoint Presentation: Sharing must be enabled to share a folder over a network. How to do this will be covered shortly. Share permissions can be used to limit the level of control that a user has over a folder. Share permissions are not the same as NTFS permissions. For simple sharing (when the security does not need to be optimum) NTFS permissions are unnecessary. 4 PowerPoint Presentation: Shared permissions are limited to Read (only) or Read/Write. Recall that if BOTH share permissions and NTFS permissions are applied to a folder, the more restrictive permission wins. 5 PowerPoint Presentation: Before sharing of a folder , file, or printer can take place over a network, the ability to share must be set in two places: From the Sharing tab of the resource’s properties window From the Network and Sharing Center (Vista/7) 6 PowerPoint Presentation: To share a folder over a network : Right-click the folder then select Properties from the drop-down menu. From the Properties window select the Sharing tab Click the Share button. From the next window you can select whom to share with. Users that you Add can be assigned Read or Read/Write access to the file which are the share permissions which is accessed through the Advanced Sharing button. 7 PowerPoint Presentation: 8 PowerPoint Presentation: To assign the share permissions, use the Advanced Sharing option. From Advanced Sharing you can add and remove users and you can also assign permissions. 9 After clicking Advanced Sharing you can click Permissions.:  After clicking Advanced Sharing you can click Permissions. 10 Here, the share permissions are assigned.: Here, the share permissions are assigned. 11 PowerPoint Presentation: As was seen in the previous slide, share permissions are much simpler than NTFS permissions. On a home network, share permissions will most likely suffice. Printers that are shared over the network must also have sharing enabled on the printer’s Sharing tab in the printer’s properties window. 12 Folder sharing in Win XP: Folder sharing in Win XP 13 XP- note that security and sharing are consolidated into one tab: XP- note that security and sharing are consolidated into one tab 14 PowerPoint Presentation: Once the folder has been set for sharing, the next step is to activate sharing over the network. 15 Setting Network Sharing in Vista/7: Setting Network Sharing in Vista/7 In Vista and Windows 7, right-clicking the Network icon in the system tray (or notification area) in the bottom right-hand side of the task bar and then clicking Open Network and Sharing Center takes you to the Network and Sharing Center. The Network and Sharing Center is where most network features are setup. 16 Network and Sharing Center: Network and Sharing Center This screen can be also be accessed by doing the following: Open Control Panel and then open Network and Internet (from Category view) OR open Network and Sharing Center (from Icon view). From the Network and Internet category, open Network and Sharing Center. 17 PowerPoint Presentation: From the Network and Sharing Center, enable file sharing from the Sharing and Discovery area at the bottom of the window. This is also where printer sharing is enabled. Note that in the next slide these features are turned off. 18 Network and Sharing Center- Vista: Network and Sharing Center- Vista 19 Network and Sharing Center- Win 7: Network and Sharing Center- Win 7 20 Setting up Sharing in Win XP: Setting up Sharing in Win XP From the Desktop in Win XP, right-click My Network Places and then select Properties from the shortcut menu that appears. That will open the Network Connections window. 21 From a previous version of our textbook:  From a previous version of our textbook 22 PowerPoint Presentation: Then, right-click the Local Area Connection and select Properties. The Local Area Connection Properties dialog box will open. Verify that Client for Microsoft Networks and File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks are both checked. If not, click the check box and click OK. 23 From Appendix C: From Appendix C 24 PowerPoint Presentation: When sharing has been properly setup Windows will display a symbol under the shared resource. In Windows XP, shared resources are identified by the placement of a “serving hand” under the asset’s icon. In Vista and Win 7, a shared resource is identified by placing a “two-friends” icon under the asset’s icon. 25 Ownership of a File or Folder: Ownership of a File or Folder Ownership of the file is important because it tells us WHO can change the NTFS permissions. Ownership : belongs to the user who created the file or folder. The owner can set file and folder permissions that prevent other users from accessing the file or folder. 26 PowerPoint Presentation: The creator of a file or folder has Ownership . Administrators, by default, have the same abilities as the file or folder creator to change NTFS permissions- but they don’t have ownership. 27 PowerPoint Presentation: The Owner of a file or folder can make the file or folder private which will block the Administrator’s ability to set NTFS permissions. Setting a file or folder to private can be done on the Sharing tab of the file or folder’s properties window. 28 PowerPoint Presentation: The Administrator can strike back by using the Special Permissions to Take Ownership . Administrators always have Take Ownership permission! Once an Administrator has taken ownership they can use Change Permission of the file or folder which take away ownership from its creator! 29 From page 852- Figure 17-46: From page 852- Figure 17-46 30 PowerPoint Presentation: The Special NTFS permissions (accessed through the Advanced button on the Security tab) can be used to change who has ownership of a file or folder. This is the end of the fourth section of Module 7. 31
