Mobile Web:  Mobile Web This presentation was updated: April 2007 Slide2:  Mobile Web refers to the World Wide Web accessed from mobile devices such as cell phones, smartphones, PDAs, and other pocketable gadgets connected to a public network. The mobile Internet is growing, with over 34.6 million mobile users in June. That’s according to the “U.S. Device Census Report for Q2 2006” from Telephia. A 2007 eMarketer study says among U.S. mobile phone users, 29% of 25-34 year olds used mobile Internet from October – November in 2006: Slide3:  M3C The Web on the Move March 2007 Slide4:  Source: Pew/Internet Feb.07 Cell Phones: One quarter (25%) of internet users say they have a cell phone that connects to the internet with a wireless connection. Among internet users with this capability on their cell, half (54%) have used it to get on the internet either at home, work, or someplace other than home or work. Among those with cell phones that can connect to the internet: 47% have done this someplace other than home or work. 28% have done this at work. 27% have done this while at home Personal Digital Assistants (PDA’s): One in eight (13%) internet users have a PDA that can connect to the internet using a wireless network. Of these, most (82%) have used it to connect at home, work, or someplace other than home or work. Specifically: 56% of those with a web-enabled PDA have used it to access the internet or email away from home or work. 49% have done this with their PDA at home. 38% have used their PDA to connect to the web or email at work. Slide5:  While several mobile Web browsers exist, Openwave is the dominant software for wireless users. It retains a 27 percent market share. Motorola's browser holds a 24 percent market share; Nokia offers a browser which maintains a 13 percent market share. Additional browsers grab up the remaining 34 percent of the handset market. The browsers include Access NetFront (9 percent); Teleca AU (6 percent); Sony Ericsson (5 percent); RIM (5 percent); Blazer (4 percent); Samsung (3 percent); Microsoft (3 percent); and Danger (2 percent). Sports ranked high in mobile reach, and news had a strong showing for both mobile and pc access. Search brands offer stronger reach on PCs: Google Search and Yahoo! Search have index scores of 23 and 25, respectively, indicating that their reach is higher among PC Web users, compared to mobile users. Web email was stronger for PC’s: Among the four leading Web e-mail applications –Yahoo! Mail, MSN Hotmail, Gmail and AOL Mail – only Gmail over indexed on mobile reach. *Note: Mobile-to-PC Reach Index for a Web site is defined as the site's reach among mobile Web users divided by its reach among PC-based Internet users. Working in partnership with Action Engine, MSNBC.com Mobile is provided free of charge but includes video and banner ads. Microsoft's Windows Mobile and Embedded Devices Division is the exclusive advertising sponsor for the service launch. During the test period, the companies said they will solicit consumer feedback on what's desired in a news service. The beta version will offer headlines and allow users to watch news videos, save news articles for later viewing and view photos. The software runs on Windows Mobile Pocket PC devices.
