Slide1:  Slide2:  The birth of Mickey Mouse occurred on a 4-day cross country train ride in early 1928. Walt Disney was returning home after having his contract for 'Oswald the Lucky Rabbit' turned down. Walt gave birth to a sympathetic mouse that he named 'Mortimer' Walt’s wife, Lillian Disney, suggested to rename the mouse 'Mickey' Slide3:  Walt and his head animator completed 2 Mickey Mouse cartoons, but neither of them were accepted. Walt then invested all he had into a 3rd film, but this time he added sound to the film. Most people seemed to think that Mickey Mouse looked too much like Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Slide4:  November 28, 1928 Mickey Mouse appeared on the big screen for the 1st time in 'Steamboat Willie' This made Mickey Mouse so famous that people would go to the theater just to see if they were going to 'run a Mickey' before they would consider buying admission. Slide5:  87 cartoon shorts starring the multi-talented mouse were produced by Walt Disney during this decade. In 1930, the first Mickey Mouse book was published. In 1930, the first Mickey Mouse comic strip was also published. Slide6:  In 1932, a special Academy Award was given to Walt Disney for the creation of Mickey Mouse In 1934, the Encyclopedia Britannica gave Mickey Mouse his own entry. In 1935, the 1st Mickey Mouse color cartoon came out called 'The Band Concert.' Slide7:  In 1935, The League of Nations presented Walt Disney with a special medal in recognition of the fact that Mickey Mouse was 'a symbol of universal good will.' Mickey was originally drawn with circles for his head, body and ears. But in 1939, that design was changed to the more pear shaped appearance we see now. Also, pupils were added to his eyes. Slide8:  Mickey's greatest honor came in 1944 when the Allied Forces, under General Dwight D. Eisenhower, prepared to invade the continent of Europe. The Allies used his name as a secret password for the D- Day invasion of France. The code name for the invasion was: Mickey Mouse. During World War II, the Disney Studio suspended nearly all commercial activity and concentrated on aiding the war effort with training films, goodwill tours, and designing of posters and armed forces insignia. Mickey Mouse played his part by appearing on insignia and posters urging national security and the purchase of war bonds. Slide9:  Walt Disney provided the voice of Mickey Mouse from 1929 to 1947. Jim Macdonald then took over and was Mickey's voice for over 3 decades from 1948 to 1983. From 1983 to now, the current voice of Mickey Mouse is Wayne Allwine. Slide10:  In 1950, Walt Disney started the 'The Mickey Mouse Club' television show. In 1955, Mickey Mouse moved to Disneyland to host his own theme park, sequences were often advertised on the Mickey Mouse Club show. Slide11:  In 1971, Mickey Mouse opened the Walt Disney World Resort. In 1978, in honor of Mickey’s 50th anniversary, he became the first cartoon character to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The star is located on 6925 Hollywood Blvd. Slide12:  In 1992, Disneyland Paris was created in which Mickey wore a beret. In 1983, Mickey Mouse saw the opening of Tokyo Disneyland.
