slide 1: Metabolic diseases have continued to constitute a major global health challenge with increasing incidence worldwide. These metabolic diseases are linked to lifestyle and nutritional habits with an underlying genetic predisposition in some cases. Thus lifestyle modifications and drugs have hitherto been the mainstay of treatment. Metabolic syndrome encompasses a wide variety of conditions including Type 2 Diabetes hypertension obesity hyperlipidemia etc. Although earlier approaches have been used for treatment with variable success rates there is an emerging and more radical surgical intervention with excellent outcomes recorded. This is called metabolic surgery with synonyms including Bariatric surgery and Diabetic surgery. Metabolic surgery is a surgical procedure which involves the use of bariatric techniques such as Ileal interposition transit bipartition gastric bypass duodenal switching gastric sleeve etc. Based on the discovery that the gastrointestinal tract has been found to play an important role in the control of body sugar metabolic surgery was birthed. The Surgical outcome has been very impressive with over 90 of patients having their blood sugar controlled over a 10 year period. Due to the impressive results obtained when treating Type 2 Diabetes metabolic surgery has been nicknamed Diabetes Surgery. METABOLIC SURGERY: AN EMERGING APPROACH FOR THE TREATMENT OF TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS slide 2: Individuals who qualify for diabetes surgery or bariatric surgery are those whose blood sugar has not been controlled with medications and lifestyle changes or there is clinical evidence of end organ damage. Ideally in Type 2 Diabetes it is best to undergo surgery before end organ damage sets in or the bodys reserve of insulin run out. The procedure itself is done laparoscopically without the need for a wide open abdominal incision. Small incisions are made through which instruments are introduced into the abdomen and the procedure carried out. This requires great skill technical ability and a whole lot of training. There are currently only about 8 metabolic surgery experts spread over 6 countries worldwide. Because it is a laparoscopic procedure patient recovery is incredibly fast with minimal postoperative complications slide 3: and side effects especially with proper and competent medical follow up and appropriate adjustments. Luckily our clinic offers Diabetes surgery bariatric surgery or more appropriately Metabolic surgery. Our team is headed by Prof. Dr Alper Celik one of only 8 surgeons worldwide who currently specializes in this new and emerging surgical option for individuals with Type 2 Diabetes and other conditions including obesity hyperlipidemia which form components of metabolic syndrome. Our state-of-the-art clinic located in the beautiful city of Istanbul Turkey coupled with highly skilled well trained technically sound and professional staff headed by Prof. Dr Alper Celik have treated more than 400 patients using the Ileal interposition and Transit Bipartition methods. Results indicate a remarkable success rate of greater than 90 of patients having their blood sugar controlled without the need for medication and insulin. Some hours post-op patients can commence intake of water and after 3-4 days on a liquid diet can slowly start to eat tender vegetable foods. Long term post-op is associated with a change in eating habits which patients notice including decreased feeling of hunger consumption of modest food portions and longer times patients feel full on a meal. slide 4: https://twitter.com/dralpercelik https://www.linkedin.com/in/alper-celik- 86ba393b/ https://www.facebook.com/metabolicsurgery Halaskargazi Cad.
