This letter was cited by U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse at a Congressional hearing as an example of a clear, effective communication by a large health insurer.

Dear Member, Thank you for choosing a Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) health plan. We’re writing to tell you about important changes that will take effect on January 1, 2014, including new premium rates that were approved by the Office of the Health Insurance Commissioner. We’ve also revised all of our health plans to comply with the federal healthcare reform law. For your 2014 coverage, you’ll need to either choose a new BCBSRI health plan or transition into the health plan we’ve recommended for you. The enclosed guide provides a side-by-side comparison of your current health plan with the plan we’re recommending. Don’t worry. Nothing is set in stone yet. You still have choices. In fact, you will have two ways to shop for and purchase BCBSRI health coverage for 2014. You can: • ontinue purchasing your coverage directly from BCBSRI by C choosing the plan that works best for you. • r, you can go to the state-run health exchange, HealthSource RI, O and possibly qualify for a tax credit, as well as health plans that have reduced deductibles and copayments, which could reduce your out-of-pocket costs.
