Slide 1: Evaluation Wednesdays Child Emily Wright Slide 2: In what ways does your media product use, develop, or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? Slide 3: Our teaser trailer, Wednesday’s Child, uses, develops and challenges many different forms and conventions of real media products. To begin research for our production, we looked into many different media texts allowing us to notice the main conventions of a teaser trailer. To assure our production looked professional and realistic we used all the conventions we found, alluring our audience to watch our new film. This is apparent through our use of titles and institutional information during our trailer. We used imaginary institutions (Venus Studios and A&EEE Entertainment) to entice the audience showing them who produced and distributed the trailer; hopefully after a while these logos would become well-known and draw a bigger audience in. We also included an array of small titles at the end mainly displaying the words ‘Coming Soon’, typical of most teaser trailers. By using these typical conventions we have allowed our production to be at a professional standard and keep the audience happy by not confusing them. Slide 4: We have also used forms such as the duration of our trailer and pace of cuts. Our finished teaser trailer is 1 minute and 2 seconds making it a model of the conventional duration, such as: Angels and Demons: lasting 1 minute and 15 seconds. Keeping it to the conservative short time span allows it to create a sense of enigma and not giving away to much, building anxiety for the audience- which is exactly what we wanted. Some trailers, we found, did go on for longer: Transformers 2 lasting 2 minutes and 16 seconds. This trailer was also very effective but was to an action genre, so it included a lot more high impact shots. But from this trailer we did borrow the pace of the cuts. From earlier research I liked the way that the shots started of slow and begin to speed up throughout and the music mimics this. We decided that this would be a good idea for our trailer as the audience can slowly indulge before the tension settles in. Slide 5: Following this we found that our choice of sound challenges conventions of most teaser trailers. A lot of teaser trailers contain a voice over or diegetic sound of some sort. But we chose in our teaser to not use any diegetic sound as we thought this slowed down our production and did not build as much tension. All of our narration was shown through the use of titles. We did not initially plan this as at the beginning of our rough production we had a shot of a news reader, reading the news. But decided to take this out and challenge typical conventions, which ended up being a good idea as it created a lot more puzzle within our final cut. Nevertheless we needed to pick a firm genre for our teaser trailer and a target audience After exploring many teaser trailers and comparing them with our ideas we primarily came up with the genre of thriller. But to develop this we created a hybrid genre of mystery/crime thriller. We hoped that this would reach out to a wider desired audience. Also when looking into our desired genre closer we decided that because of its significance it needed to aim at an adult audience, both male and female. Slide 6: When looking at mise-en-scene ideas for costumes and props we came across a distinctive image that we was all influenced by: This image is from ‘The Schindler;s List’. As it was such an influential image we used and developed it as a main theme within our teaser trailer. We improved this outcome by de-saturating the image behind the red scarf; keeping the girl pale and innocent with the vivid red very apparent. Also the red clothing on our protagonist character challenges the image of the young girl. Red is associated with love and danger and confronts the stereotypical innocence of a young girl. Slide 7: I have found that teaser trailers should be enticing and draw an audience in, they should present some information of the story but not give away the whole narrative. To mimic this convention we added Todorov’s theory to our teaser trailer. We did this by showing a simple shot of the child on a swing, viewing the equilibrium, then appearing back to an empty swing, showing the disequilibrium. This creates an instant tension and the audience will be wanting to no and find out what the outcome will be. Slide 8: How effective us the combination of your main product and ancillary texts? Slide 9: To get our film out there for everybody to see we needed different ways of ‘spreading the news’. We needed it to reach all different demographics, so we decided to produce film posters, magazine front covers and methods of viral marketing such as, a website and a facebook page to accomplish all audiences. Our main concern was that we showed close cohesion throughout all our tasks to keep it looking professional and convincing. So in order to do this we developed a style for all of our outcomes. We decided that we would keep consistent features throughout, such as: fonts, and a colour scheme. The font we chose to use was American Typewriter and the colour scheme was kept to Red, Black and White. All of these features appeared throughout all our tasks creating a successful advertising package. Slide 10: When designing the posters, as a group, we decided to each use a different image. This would give us an advantage to explore all different outcomes. When creating my posters, I focused them around posters I had researched in my earlier analysis: 2009/winner_bestset.html – Coraline Posters. These posters had an ongoing appearance, being released weekly, revealing a new character and letter of the alphabet. They also had a cohesion between them with the bright colours and consistent titles. I decided to create a similar outcome by having different images of our protagonist character, slowly zooming in. They also revealed a new line of the poem ‘Mondays Child’ which we based the name of our teaser trailer around. This was to create enigma. Slide 11: Again, when designing our our magazine covers, as a group we decided to each design one with a different image. Allowing us, again, to reach a wider desired audience. We also arranged between us, to convey a different type of magazine: Empire and Little White Lies. We did this because they have a very different approach and we wanted to show that we could still create cohesion between all our products and also attract different audiences. Little White Lies uses a more pop art effect as Empire creates a more realistic setting. As you can see, from our finished magazine covers, there is a clear consistency throughout. Each cover creates cohesion by using the same colour scheme and font and even though they are different styles, because of the magazine type, they still look very close. Slide 12: After creating our ancillary products we decided to create a Facebook page. This would give us a good idea of what people thought of our advertising package and allow us to get a lot of audience feedback from a wide range of different people. Obviously we could not design the whole of our Facebook page how we desired, so to make sure it flowed we used our posters as display pictures to create cohesion. Each week we would add a new poster, keeping the audience enticed and a new status asking them things about our production and a countdown until the release date. This proved to be very successful as we got a lot of audience feedback and encouraged a lot of fans to follow our page. Our main text and ancillary tasks, I think, showed a close consistency throughout making a successful and professional package. Slide 13: What have you learned from your audience feedback? Slide 14: Audience feedback was a big part in developing our final cut as it helped in making our production more successful and professional. We began by creating questioners that we handed around class friends, family, teachers and other students. We mainly focused on asking questions about the genre, story line and target audience as this was in the early stages of creating our teaser trailer. After this we collected our feedback on Microsoft Office Excel 2007 in order to count our feedback easily and also create pie charts. Our initial feedback gave us a good idea of what the audience wanted. It allowed us to easily pick a genre and helped us with creating a story line. The main aspect it aided us in was our target audience as we asked a range of ages in different demographics. Slide 15: Following this we showed our media class and other friends and family the rough cut of our teaser trailer. Although it was only a rough cut it still gave a good example of what our final piece was going to look like giving us the chance to increase the quality of our production. We noted all the things people had to say, good and bad, giving us the chance to improve. One of he main concerns that people noticed was the equilibrium and disequilibrium of the girl on the swing. In our rough cut the shot of the empty swings was shown before the shot of the young girl on the swing. This proved to be a big problem and was confusing the audience. We re arranged our sequence and screened it again to our class providing more feedback, but they was happy, so was we. Slide 16: Our last way to receive feedback was produced within our ancillary tasks. We created a social networking page on facebook(click here to see our Facebook page) which allowed us to receive a lot of audience feedback. It is obvious from our wall that we have received a lot of feedback and positive comments about our production and everybody is excited to see a finished film. We started to invite everybody to view Wednesday’s Child and within a week we had over 100 fans. This viral marketing campaign has succeeded in letting everybody no about or up coming film. By adding our posters and magazine covers and uploading our finished teaser trailer we have received a lot of comments praising us on our use of consistency and cohesion. How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages? : How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages? Slide 18: Technology is continually changing and evolving making consumers into producers. This is giving people the chance to share media products and information all over the world and this is all because of the Web 2.0. In all aspects of planning, creating and developing my media products, media technology has played a vital part. In the early stages of researching existing teaser trailers, I used sites such as YouTube and Google to help, allowing me to get a good understanding and route to take. I frequently went back and used these sites as they proved to be very helpful. As a group we also created a blog on GooleBlogger giving us the chance to log all of the planning, creativity, development and finally our evaluation stages of our final piece. This site allows us to upload power points (Microsoft PowerPoint), through the means of Author Steam and Slideshare. By digitally showing our findings we can really show off images and footage we have and share it with people. Other technology we have used to upload documents to our blog included: HP ScanJet 4070 Photosmart Scanner, which we used to upload paper documents such as story board and sketches. We was also supplied with digital cameras, Konica Dimage E500 letting us capture images that we could use for our ancillary products. And finally to edit these captured images we used programs such as: Paint Shop Pro X3 and Picasa 3 to enhance the quality of images and get desired look. Slide 19: During the production we used a JVC GR-D860 Digital Video camera to capture our footage and to allow our footage to be at a professional standard we used a JVC tripod that gave us the ability to move our camera around easily and smoothly. We uploaded our footage to Adobe Premier Pro letting us cut up our scenes easily and move our shots into desired timeline. Further along the course we were introduced to Apple Mac’s and were told they would improve our production, especially the titles. So after getting our timeline in order we transferred our footage via USB to the mac’s allowing us to experiment with industry standard titles. On the Apple Mac’s we was able to create professional titles by using iMovie and created an effective DVD menu using iDVD. We also added Special features to our DVD menu creating an effective menu. When creating our ancilary tasks I used Adobe Paintshop CS4 to develop effective posters and magazine covers. This was a programme I was familiar with and gave me freedom to create layers and end up with a professional outcome. Finally in the final stages of showing and advertising our teaser trailer we used a social networking site, Facebook, to advertise our production package. This aloud us to share our teaser trailer with a wide audience and get a lot of feedback and information.
