What are Knights? A knight was the middle ages soldier. They were under a ‘lord’s’ command. They would go to battle for their ‘lord’ and were loyal unto death.

A Knight’s Childhood Most knights were born into wealthy or high-class families. They started out as pages to knights, at age 6 or 7. When they were older they might become squires. This is when they would be taught how to wield a sword, and more of the ways of a knight.

Modern Knights Today, knighthood is a symbolic honor. This honor is given to a diverse class of   people. Mountain climber Edmund Hillary and musician Paul McCartney have been knighted. Many others have been knighted for noble or courageous deeds.

Knight’s Armor Knights wear lots of armor. They wear heavy metal plates or chainmail. They also wear helmets which greatly obstruct vision. (left)

Tournaments Knights regularly participated in jousting and fighting tournaments. This gave the knights valuable practice and also was used as a way to find the strongest knights to send on a mission.

Where they lived Knight’s of the old days lived in castles. They were to help defend in case of attack. The peasants would live in their farms outside.
