Mass vs. Weight
Mass -- describes the amount of matter in the object. Weight -- describes size of the gravitational force acting on the object.
In terms of mass : This dumbbell is hard to move/lift because it is composed of a large amount of matter . In terms of weight : This dumbbell is hard to move/lift because of the large gravitational pull exerted on it by Earth.
Mass is measured in kilograms . Weight is measured in Newtons .
Mass is a Scalar . Weight is a Vector which points down toward the center of the planet.
Mass of an inanimate object always remains the same . Weight of an inanimate object can change if the object’s location in gravitational field of the planet changes.
Mass of this boy remains the same no matter how high he climbs. Weight of this boy gets lower as he climbs up the rope.
Weight = mg Near the surface of Earth g=9.8 m/s 2
In Physics class this athlete will learn that near the surface of Earth the weight of the hammer he is throwing is approximately 10 times larger than its mass .
In Physics class this athlete will learn that the mass of the hammer he is throwing will be the same on the Moon.
In Physics class this athlete will learn that he would be able to throw this hammer a lot further on the Moon because the hammer will weigh a lot less there.
